I count myself among the biggest of fans of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler and consider him to be the greatest guitarist of all time (certainly the greatest non-classical guitarist) so on that alone I gave this CD a 5 star score.I would just mention one potential drawback, that being the editing. Several of the songs, for instance "Money For Nothing", are in their 'single' form, which is to sat edited for time to fit into an FM radio broadcast, therefore, if you really want the whole song you need to buy the original CD. So this is a plug to buy the whole collection. More expensive, surely, but totally worth it.I am a bit unsure who picked the songs for this CD, but the mix is a bit tilted to newer stuff. I think it might have been improved if a couple of tracks ("Heavy Fuel" comes to mind) had been left out and the unedited versions had been put on the CD.Of course, this is all quibbling. I still recommend the CD, the sound quality is superb and the mix of old and new makes it an interesting career retrospective (to date). I have seen Dire Straits and Mark in concert several times and "Local Hero/Wild Theme" live at the close of the CD still gives me goosebumps when I hear it.

Dire Straits have released three Greatest Hits style compilations, and all of them contain some notable flaws. You'd think after three goes at it, they'd get it right, but apparently not so. 'Money For Nothing' contains some glaring omissions, while the 2CD 'Private Investigations' sounds more promising until you realise it also contains Knopfler's solo stuff. 'Sultans Of Swing' is probably the best of the bunch, since every album is represented to some degree, and it does contain most (if not all) of what fans want to hear.As expected, the collection is dominated by 'Brothers In Arms' ('Walk Of Life', 'So Far Away', 'Your Latest Trick', 'Money For Nothing', and the title track) and 'On Every Street' ('Calling Elvis', 'Heavy Fuel', and the title track). That's fair enough I suppose, although it's a pity that a few more songs from the band's early days couldn't be included. There's certainly no arguing with 'Sultans of Swing', 'Lady Writer', 'Romeo And Juliet', 'Tunnel of Love', or 'Twisting By The Pool', but it would have been nice to include 'Down To The Waterline', and once again they leave out 'Industrial Disease'. There are a couple of other issues, in that several songs are presented in abbreviated radio edits instead of the album mixes, and the inclusion of Mark Knopfler's solo track from 'Local Hero' doesn't make much sense.It's a pity that there's no one Dire Straits collection that provides a really comprehensive summary of their career, but we have to make the best of what we've got. Although it contains a couple of flaws, 'Sultans Of Swing' is the best bet for casual fans looking for the big hits, and newcomers to introduce themselves to the band.

I was lucky enough to be living in England just outside London in a little town called West Ruislip just down the cobbled streets from the "T" station near the famous "Orchards" pub when Dire Straits released their "Love Over Gold" album in 1982, and the young English couple living in the flat upstairs played it over and over, introducing me both to their good taste in music and the terrific group called "Dire Straits" in the process. Of course, as I think back upon it, I was familiar with their hit "Sultans Of Swing", but never really paid much attention until hearing this terrific album and Mark Knopfler's unbelievably stirring, crisp and innovative guitar solos. Soon I was down at the music shoppe buying all their other albums. By that time I was familiar with their unique and unforgettable sound and also their very introspective lyrics. I came to love all their albums as much as "Love Over Gold", and I was pleased when they recently released this anthology of many of their hits, even including a theme from Knopfler's "Local Hero" movie score.I really like all the cuts here, from "Sultans Of Swing' to "Romeo And Juliet" to "Lady Writer". In each, Knopfler's distinctive twanging guitar sound echoes in my house till all hours of the morning, along with "Private Investigations, " Tunnel Of Love", and "So Far Away". My own personal favorites here are the live version of "Love Over Gold" and "Money For Nothing". In the time since the band was actively recording in the mid 1980s, Knopfler has become a kind of institutionalized artistic force everywhere one looked, writing soundtrack music for (among other films) "Local Hero" and "Cal", performing both alone and with Dire Straits, and collaborating with other artists, as well. The music here is very and innovative progressive rock, and the electric guitar work literally sings by itself. When I listen to the album now, it is a source of continuing amazement to me that Knopfler could make the sounds that emanated out of that instrument so uniquely animated as he did. The whole band is terrific, and it is sad that they made so few albums before internal frictions broke them apart. Enjoy this and their other wonderful albums. Dire Straits made an indelible stamp on modern rock that I am sure you will find entertaining and entrancing. Enjoy!

I just recently got into listening to Dire Straits, and have grown extremely fond of this group's ability to perform music. This particular CD I especially like (I also have Brother in Arms). One of my favorite songs on this CD is the song "Sultans of Swing", which I spent last night listening to. It's not exactly a complicated song, 3 guitars, drums, vocal that I could hear. The melody, though, is really good - better than most anything else I heard from Eagles or Led Zeppelin.I highly recommend this CD if you're either a Dire Straits fan, or just a newbie like myself. This CD is a good groundwork to really get into their music more (I'm in the process of buying all the CDs from them I can find).

i found this book very disappointing. At the very least, a full 25% of the book is devoted to the index. A large portion of the book provides only very general information such as soil structure, simple water delivery systems, fertilization, growing in raised beds, and California weather. If you live in So CA, you probably already know about June Gloom and the Santa Ana winds. I was hoping for a month to month guide of suggested planting, culture, specific tasks for each month, harvesting, etc. The only hint of this is a two page chart in the back of the book, the same ones I've gotten for free from Burpee ("Planting Guide for Southern CA") or Ferry Morse ("Planting Guide for Southwest"). An example from the month of October: "Continue to succession sow quick-maturing crops for a continuing harvest, but give heat-sensitive plants some afternoon shade and do not let them dry out" Duh. Not very specific. And word for word "Sow and Plant" paragraph from the month before.PROS:-about 25% of the book is devoted to the culture of specific crops, although presented entirely separate from the month to month guide.. This section has some potential, although it is anything but comprehensive. Is it possible that there is no mention of spinach at all? Not even in the two page planting guide. But there is a section on agretti, if that is on your list of must have crops...Additionally, nowhere are there suggested varieties that would perform well here in So CA.

I took a chance on this one, since the title says it's for southern california, and I live in Tennessee. However, I quickly found out it is great information for any part of the country. This book is everything I've been wanting in a vegetable gardening book. I've needed one that tells me in simple terms what to do BY MONTH in order to get the most out of my garden. I'm one of those people who needs a lot of help, as I'm just getting started in raising my own food, and I was feeling overwhelmed by all the book choices, all the things to know to do and not do. For me, this is just the perfect, go-to book that lays things out simply, but with no shortage of information and help. The woman knows her stuff.. I feel sure this book will be dogeared and underlined into unrecognizable shape in a year or two. Get it. You won't be disappointed.

Dr. Sinha practices internal medicine in southern California (Silicon Valley) and has a large dose of South Asians in his clinic. "South Asia" usually encompasses India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Maldives. One fifth of the world's population lives here. This book pertains mostly to Indians, which is Dr. Sinha's ethnicity. I live in the Pheonix, AZ, area and we have a fair number of Indian engineers and physicians.WHY DO SOUTH ASIANS NEED THEIR OWN SPECIAL HEALTH GUIDE?Because Dr. Sinha says they have unique genetic and cultural issues that predispose them to type 2 diabetes, abdominal obesity, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, and adverse cholesterol numbers. For example, compared to natives who stay in their home countries, South Asian immigrants to the West have 3-4 times higher prevalence of diabetes, he says. Dr Sinha has a program that he's convinced will prevent or forestall these medical problems in South Asians.According to Sinha, South Asians eat too many carbohydrates and are too sedentary. Especially those who have moved to the West (e.g., US, UK, Europe, Canada). He notes that the core of the typical South Asian diet is flat breads, lentils, rice, fried crispy snacks (with heart-poisoning trans fats), culminating in 150-200 daily grams of carbohydrate more than he sees in other ethnics in California. Western fast foods, sodas, and sweets compound the problem. He says "most South Asians are skinny-fat," meaning skinny legs and arms but with a fat belly from visceral fat. This is also called sarcopenic obesity.This is much more than a weight-loss book; it's not even primarily a weight-loss book.Speaking of obesity, the usual "healthy" body mass index (BMI) numbers don't apply to Asians. The World Health Organisation classifies Asians as underweight if BMI is 18.4 or less, healthy at BMI of 18.5 to 13, overweight at BMI 23.1 to 25, and obese if BMI is over 25. These numbers are lower than those used for non-Asian populations.Another issue in his South Asian patient population is vitamin D deficiency related to their dark skin (less vitamin D production) and too much time indoors. He says vitamin D deficiency promotes inflammation and insulin resistance. More on this below.Some South Asians have a K121Q gene mutation that causes insulin resistance, which in turn can cause disease. And whether it's genetic or not (but I think it is), he says South Asians tend to have higher Lp(a) [aka lipoprotein(a)], which causes early and aggressive coronary artery disease. They also tend to have small dense LDL, leading to a lower-than-expected total cholesterol level which may be deceptively low.Sinha notes a strong vegetarian preference in Indians but spends almost no time discussing it. From the book, I can't tell if Indian vegetarians are lacto-ovo-vegetarians, pescetarians, or vegans. Perhaps you could enlighten me in the comments section.SINHA'S GRAND UNIFICATION THEORY OF DISEASE CAUSATIONSo, South Asians, at least in the West, have a high-carb diet, are too sedentary, and have genetic tendencies to heart disease and diabetes. How do these factors cause disease? It's all tied together with insulin resistance. Insulin is the main hormone that keeps our blood sugar from rising too high after we digest a meal. Insulin drives blood sugar into our body cells to be used as energy or stored eventually as fat. If our tissues have insulin resistance, blood sugar levels rise. As a compensatory effort, our pancreas excretes more insulin in to the blood stream than would normally be the case. Whether or not that eventually lowers blood sugar levels, the higher insulin levels themselves can cause toxicity. For example, higher insulin levels raise blood pressure, which damages the cells lining the insides of our arteries, leading to chronic inflammation and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Some of the arterial damage is mediated through small dense LCL cholesterols (aka type B LDL), which is promoted by high insulin levels (hyperinsulinemia).Insulin resistance also results in a defective and overactive immune system, which further promotes chronic inflammation. This inflammation is "...the root cause of almost every imaginable chronic disease...from heart attacks and strokes to Alzheimers Disease."Anyway, this is Dr. Sinha's hypothesis, and there is some scientific evidence to support it. Sinha says that the concept of insulin resistance "weaves together virtually every chronic ailment currently afflicting South Asians." That may be a bit hyperbolic: He carves out no exceptions for arthritis, asthma, eczema, migraines, glaucoma, macular degeneration, hearing loss, erectile dysfunction, hepatitis C, prostate enlargement, toenail fungus, or male-pattern baldness. Dr. Sinha's Grand Unification Theory of Disease Causation has some support among physicians and scientists, but is by no means universally accepted among them. As for myself, I think he's over-simplifying (for his readership's sake?) and getting a bit ahead of the science.Most clinicians don't testing directly for insulin resistance. What are the indirect clues? Belly fat, low HDL cholesterol, high trigylcerides, high blood pressure, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. These are components of the metabolic syndrome. Not everybody with one or more of these factors has insulin resistance but many do.WHAT'S HIS PROGRAM?If Sinha is correct, the South Asian Health Solution is a "low-insulin lifestyle" achieved through carbohydrate-reduced eating, exercise, and avoidance or resolution of belly fat. These help improve all components of the aforementioned metabolic syndrome. The backbone of the plan is carbohydrate restriction.For low-carb eating, avoid wheat bread and Indian flat breads (e.g., chapatis, naans, parathas, puris, phulkas), aloo (primarily potatoes and starchy vegetables), rice and other grains, beans, and sugar. Keep track of your net carbohydrates (he likes FitnessPal.com, which includes South Asian foods). If you need to burn off body fat, limit carbs to 50-100 grams/day (digestible or net carbs, I assume). Aim for 100-150 grams/day to maintain health and weight loss. You might be able to add "safe starches" later: white rice, potatoes.To replace your Indian flat breads, learn how to make them with substitutes for wheat flour: coconut flour or almond flour (no skins) or almond meal (skin included). Recipe on page 347.Rice alternatives are cauliflower "rice," shredded cabbage, broccoli slaw, chopped broccoli, and chopped carrots.He likes ghee, extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, and butter. Avoid high omega-6 fatty acid consumption, as in vegetable oils. Of course, avoid trans-fats. Good fats are saturated, monousaturated, and omega-3s.He provides a few low-carb recipes, surprisingly without specific carb counts: chapatis, microwave bread, cauliflower pizza, coconut cauliflower rice, shredded cabbage sabji, gajar halwa (carrot pudding), and coconut ladoo.Dr. Sinha doesn't provide a comprehensive meal plan. He trusts his California South Asians to figure out how and what to eat. They're smarter than average (he never says that, but that's been my experience with South Asians in my world).Dr. Sinha is also a huge proponent of exercise. He'll tell you about squats, lunges, planks, burpees, yoga, and Tabata intervals. He agrees with me and The Low Carb Dietitian's Guide to Health and Beauty: How a Whole-Foods, Low-Carbohydrate Lifestyle Can Help You Look and Feel Better Than Ever, that "physical activity is the most effective fountain of youth available."I skipped some of the chapters due to lack of time and interest: women's issues (e.g., pregnancy, polycystic ovary syndrome, post-partum depression, osteoporosis), childhood, fatigue and stress management, and anti-aging.MISCELLANEOUS TIDBITS - he likes high-sensitivity CRP testing. - his metabolic goals for South Asians are: 1) keep waist circumference under 35 inches (90 cm) in men, under 31 inches (80 cm) in women, 2) keep triglycerides under 100 mg/dl (1.13 mmol/l), 3) keep HDL cholesterol over 40 mg/dl (1.03 mmol/l) for men, and above 50 mg/dl (1.29 mmol/l) for women, 4) keep systolic blood pressure 120 or less, and diastolic pressure 80 or less, 5) keep fasting blood sugar under 100 mg/dl (5.6 mmol/l) and hemoglobin A1c under 5.7%, and 6) keep hs-CRP under 1.0 mg/dl. - he says HDL cholesterol helps reduce insulin resistance via apoprotein A-1 (apo A-1), which increases glucose uptake by cells. - he likes to follow the triglyceride/HDL ratio. If under 3, it means low risk of insulin resistance being present. - he likes to follow total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio: ideal is under 3.5. - statins are way over-used. - ignore total cholesterol level by itself. - stress control and sleep are important. - the author had some metabolic syndrome components: high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and type B LDL (small, dense particles). - he dislikes the usual-recommended low-fat, low-cholesterol diet. - 4 tbsp (60 ml) of extra virgin olive oil daily seems to lower blood pressure. - magnesium supplementation my lower blood pressure. - the liver stores about 100 grams of glycogen and muscles store 300-500 grams. - Vanaspati is a "cheap ghee substitute" made from vegetable oil and widely used in Indian restaurants and many Indian processed foods. Avoid it since it's a source of trans fats. - aloo sabji is a potato dish. - traditional Indian herbs/spices include turmeric, cardamon, ginger, and cilantro. - find and Indian medication guide at http://www.medguideindia.com/show_brand.php - coconut milk is a traditional fat in India. - curry, curry, curry. - non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is quite common in South Asians, seemingly linked to visceral (abdominal) obesity and insulin resistance related to carbohydrates. - the book has no specific focus on diabetes.THUMBS UP OR DOWN?Overall, I like many of Dr. Sinha's ideas. They seem to be supported by his experience with his own patients. I trust him. I bet many South Asians and non-Asians eating the Standard American Diet would see improved health by following his low-carb, physically active program.

I saw the author interviewed on ZdoggMD.com. His information was very compelling. I am not Asian but have 5 of 6 markers for metabolic syndrome as reviewed in this book. I took this to my doctor and we started doing tests and changing medications. Things are improving, especially with the recommendation to cut carbs. It's a whole new way of life for me.

I plan to post a longer review later.I liked the book primarily because it explains the causality behind CAD (and metabolic diseases more generally), in a simple, easy to understand way.Regardless of where you stand on the low fat vs. low carb spectrum, it highlights what both sides appear to agree on:a) eat a lot of nutrient dense foods (especially, plant based)b) get a lot of exercisec) de-stress.These are simple rules, but this book offers some useful and practical guidelines, including suggestions for apps. The book is also novel in that it emphasizes ratios, rather than presenting absolute targets.If you are of Indian origin, this book offers what several others do not. It has an excellent understanding of Indian cultures, and offers suggestions, including recipes, that are geared specifically for Indo-Americans.A suggestion. While reading this book, don't take the recommendations to suggest that you can be a glutton, especially when it comes to Saturated fats, which, in high concentrations, do cause oxidative stress (see e.g. [...]Eat in moderation. Control portion sizes. Eat a lot of anti-oxidant foods. Choose your carbohydrate food sources carefully, emphasizing low-glycemic and high-anti oxidant ones.I have gained a great deal from this book, and recommend it whole-heartedly. It is brilliantly written, and extremely useful. A game changer for Indian-Americans.

I am a Functional Medicie doctor from India. I highly recommend this book for ALL Indians, including those living in India.I would certainly encourage all doctors in India to read this book too! I am very happy to see a well trained physician getting out of the cholesterol-&-high -fat-centric approach to heart disease & talk about the things that actually matter, namely High inflammation, insulin resistance, low vitamin D, the sitting disease , omega 3, B vitamins , high carbohydrate intake..........A special note to the readers from India, that annual health check up that some of you value a lot, does'nt tell you anything! It doesnt measure most of the things that count!Dr. Sinha has successfully covered a wide range of subjects , from pre-pregnancy care, to childhood health challenges, to early heart disease in young Asians, to senior health in just 300 pages. That's not easy to do! I also note with pleasure that he has addressed women & heart disease in a separate chapter. Though some of the recipes in the book may be difficult for people in India to incorporate, because many of those ingredients are not available here,the pricniples are the same.His book is based on very sound knowledge. I am somebody who has studied this & is struggling with the exact issues that Dr. Sinha talks about.( I am Advanced Fellowship trained in Functional & Regenerative Medicine from USA ).

While I am of South Asian decent, I think the book could be an excellent guide for anyone trying to improve their health in a natural way. What I truly enjoyed is the book does not promote a new diet or temporary fad that you will stop once the season changes, but breaks down complex scientific topics into easy to understand laymen terms and promotes simple solutions that can be incorporated into a daily routine.I know I will be referring back to some of the examples and formulas in the book for years to come. Buying Ricki Heller's book Living Candida Free and joining her Sweet Life community was the single best thing I have ever done for my health. After cooking for 4 boys for over 20 years, I was burned out and decided I was going to go the route of very simple meals. Many of those meals were to grab a fast (organic, but still processed) veggie burger or something similar. Recently, I became very sick to the point of lying on the couch and watching a movie was a huge effort! After 5 weeks of being sick, I went to my ND and she diagnosed Candida and suggested I go on the "Anti-Candida Diet". After looking at all the things I couldn't have, I was despondent. Seriously, "This was NOT going to be fun AT ALL", I thought. I went online and looked at the different books on this diet. After reading the reviews on the books, I decided to buy Living Candida Free because many people said it was EASY to understand. (And, it *definitely* was!) At the same time, I joined Ricki's group, The Sweet Life. There, I found support not only from Ricki, but also from a group of people that were going through the same process as I was. Best of all, when you join the group you have access to TONS of extra recipes.I started making recipes from the book, followed the diet strictly, and within one week I was feeling AMAZING!!! I could not believe the difference in just one week! Three weeks after starting the diet, I jump out of bed, can't wait to start cooking and have more energy than I have had in years! The biggest thing is that I feel I am eating better than I have in my life with incredible tasting meals! I don't feel I am being deprived of anything at all. In fact, my body is responding so positively to this way of eating, I can't imagine going back to processed foods and sugary desserts. I am slowly making my way through the recipes and OMG are they DELICIOUS!!! Pizza? It's in there. "Chocolate" pudding? It's in there. "Sun dried" tomatoes? Ketchup? Cookies? It's ALL there!!! THANK YOU, Ricki Heller, for writing this book and others, and for your amazing Sweet Life group! You have changed my life for the better!!

I found this book to be a little to no more helpful than her website. You could probably get most of the information and some recipes from her site. I think my biggest complaint was the layout of the book. As a working mom who still needs to cook a separate meal for my family, I didn't find this layout and flow at all helpful. I can see if you don't have kids or if you are only making these meals for yourself that this flow would be ok. I'm pressed for time and have a lot more to cook after these meals.1. I feel this book was laid out in Word and bounded as a book. There's no design to it, no breaking things apart, and no color coding. The flow is always a brief description, then the ingredients, then the steps, and then the notes. There are page breaks in the middle of the recipes. It makes it awkward for reading while cooking. The "notes" are always at the bottom. Never close to the asterisk. Yes, a minor thing but you're also flipping back and forth to read due to the page breaks. It's hard to read and work with a cook book like this when there are sooo many good cookbooks out there that break things apart and make them visually pleasing and easy to scan.2. A meal plan is provided but no shopping list. How great would it be just to rip that page out and go shopping without spending a good chunk of time reading through all those recipes?3. A meal prep cheat sheet would be awesome! As someone who doesn't soak and dry my nuts and legumes, I wasn't fully prepared for this. I'd like to see more instructions on the meal plans that say, "You'll be eating 3 servings of x so start soaking these on this day so you're ready to cook right away!"4. I don't feel this has been updated with products that have come on the market since it's publication in 2015 nor are there product substitution ideas.5. I never felt full unless I ate a ridiculous amount of food and the taste was always very off for me. I didn't come from a SAD diet, so it wasn't that I was missing the taste of highly processed food and sugar, I was eating Paleo before this and the only thing I cut out was meat and fruit. After 10 days on the Vegan track I had to add meat back in which I know she stated was ok to do.Overall it's an ok book with lots of room for layout improvement to make it easier for those adapting to some new ways of cooking. I am truly impressed with her recipe testing and the things that she uses to make dishes. I'd read through some of them and think there was no way that would work and it does. Ricki is a true recipe creator and that's really impressive to me.I'm not sure I'd recommend this to others. I took the principles she taught and found other paleo authors I liked and knew I liked the taste of their food and adapted. It wasn't too hard to adapt, I just had to know which ingredients I had to omit from the recipes and make it work.

did not realize it was a vegetarian version. Many product Not sure what they were. Had to research and has lots of soy products which should not be on a candida diet. Has good reference information though and does indicate each persons diet will be different.

It has a great index, She is very knowlegeable. She gives ideas for lots of allowed items on grocery lists. She writes well and gives good explanations. She has a ton of recipes that are allowed in the Anti Candida Diet. I liked it alot. She writes in story form, so it is easy to follow her.

This is an amazing book and I'd highly recommend it to anyone dealing with candida. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book isn't just a cookbook (although I would have been fine if it had been). In addition to the great recipes, the book touches upon a variety of information regarding candida (what it is, how to best fight the condition, how to deal with various cravings that might occur once switching to an ACD, etc.)The author has made what seemed like an impossible feat (switching to an anticandida diet) possible in my life. I really appreciate Dr. Heller writing about her own personal stories and struggles amongst all of the great information she has provided. Oh, and let me take a second to simply talk about the recipes. My mouth literally salivates after reading each one!Thank you, Dr. Heller for all that you do. You are amazing.

This is the BEST book for the information and great recipes. I was looking for recipes to help with allergies and on-going yeast infections. The book is so informative and well written. The recipes are delicious that are rich with flavor. I use this book daily.
