If you want to experience the joys of Christian living, I highly encourage you to read this book. Tozer’s goal of this book was to aid God’s hungry children so to find Him (via preface of book). Here are some of the things I love about this book:1. “The impulse to pursue God originates with God, but the outworking of that impulse is our following hard after Him.” Tozer explains the paradox of the importance of pursuing God. Even though as Christians we are going to heaven and we experience God’s unchanging love, there are still privileges of continuing to dive into God. God is looking for people He can lavish His blessings on, and those people are the ones who are diving into their relationship with Him.2. “Self is the opaque veil that hides the face of God from us.” Jesus’ death on the cross removed the veil that was hinder us from coming to God. There is nothing on God’s end keeping us from experiencing the presence of God. And yet, most of us do not experience God personally or experientially in life. We keep ourselves from God.3. “To most people God is an inference, not a reality. He is a deduction from evidence which they consider adequate, but He remains personally unknown to the individual.” If God is real, then He must be relevant to our lives.4. “It is the nature of God to speak, to communicate his thoughts to others.” God is not silent. God did not forget how to talk when the Bible was finished. He sees that plans He has for your life and wants to lead you into them.5. “Jesus taught that His power lay in His continual look at God” (John 5:19-21). This is still a kind of radical thought for me, but Jesus did nothing on earth out of His Godhead. Everything He did is something we can do through the power of the Holy Spirit. The key is to continually gaze at Jesus.6. “One of the greatest hindrances to internal peace which the Christian encounters is the common habit of dividing our lives into two areas – the sacred and the secular.” Whatever we do we should do it all for the Lord. would highly recommend the Pursuit of God to anyone wanting to go deeper with God. I am sure if you read it you will get something different than what I laid out above, but I believe whatever you get would greatly help your relationship with Jesus.

This may be the most convicting book I've ever read. I do not include the Bible in the books I've read. It is the inspired Word of God and therefore in a class of it's own. A. W. Tozer impresses me as a theologian for the masses. His insights are deep but his style is straightforward and easy to understand. I will not attempt to do a point by point review. I'll just say that if we, professing Christians, will honestly consider the points he makes we will come to a better understanding of what prevents us from having the intimate relationship with our Creator that He clearly desires. The point Tozer makes about the veil that separates us from God is enough in itself to explain our problem. I intend to read it again taking notes and writing down his many statements that make for excellent quotes. The prayers he includes at the end of each chapter are worth writing down and including in ones regular prayer time.

God’s Pursuit of Man is A.W. Tozer’s extraordinary prequel to his more famously known Pursuit of God: The Human Thirst For the Divine. In this book he aims to explain what it truly means to know God, as well as to be fully known by Him. The author so masterfully explains that, though humans are commanded to seek God, their ability to do so is quintessentially rooted in His relentless pursuit of them. It is only when the individual humbly recognizes his or her dependence on the sovereign God that they are ultimately freed to rightly seek after the face of their creator. In short, one must come to understand who sought them first in order to pursue Him back.In God’s Pursuit of Man, A.W. Tozer uses his skill of simplicity by taking certain topics which would normally require someone hundreds and hundreds of pages to explain and condensing them down to approximately one-hundred and fifty pages in a small 5x8 inch book. The book contains merely 10 chapters, all of which are so efficiently and eloquently written. Though his books are shorter in nature, they are by no means a short read. Tozer may possess the ability to say much with only a few words, but the topics which he chooses to compose on are still complicated by nature. I would encourage the reader to slow down when reading this book in order to properly consider the weighty topics about which Tozer writes. Gold becomes purified through an extensive refining process, and Tozer’s words are the same. Understanding the depths of his wisdom will take time and effort by the reader. From my own experience, it is quite worth it.When it comes to more surface level details, the book is up to snuff. It arrived at my house in perfect condition only two days after I made the purchase. The cover is made out of thick paper with an almost rubbery texture. Even though it is a small book, it has a very sturdy feel to it. The front cover displays the title and author very clearly for the reader to see, and the back cover contains a well-written summary from a prestigious publishing company, Moody Publishers.Overall, I am extremely impressed by this book! I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to be challenged in their faith. Its timeless truths make it a book which can be easily turned to time and time again for guidance in life. I consider it to be the best purchase I have made on Amazon.com up until today.

Fascinating story, well written, offers so many threads of intellectual debate. I've read the series but (as is often the case) it's book 1 that I find the cream of the crop. This is my 3rd purchase of the book (those I lent it to declined to return them). Also an action packed & psychologically involved YA story. I especially enjoyed that, towards the end, they gave a first hand description of someone (not saying who) experiencing the process of being unwound... one of those things that translate far better in books than in movies. My one regret is not having a group to read it with and then engage in about 10 hours of conversation about.

This is a wonderfully written book , concerning a future world where the abortion issue is settled by dissecting children and using body parts for grafting and organ transplants . Not to be considered killing as long as all the body parts are used . Until the age of sixteen . This story concerns the fugitives that seek to escape and simply remain hidden until there sixteenth birthday .Highly recommend this book , on the order of the Underground railroad , George Orwell's "1984" and Nolan and Johnson's "Logan's Run" combined.

Unwind is a very unique book. I don’t think that I’ve ever read a book that even comes close to it. I thought it was another dystopian book, but it doesn’t quite fit into that category. The premise of the book alone is unique and its just too difficult to place. I think this is a really good thing and it had me hooked. This story is about a society that has been created within the United States. There was a civil war in which people fought either for pro-choice or pro-life in terms of abortion. However, in order to satisfy both sides, a bill was passed in which a child that is born cannot be harmed. Rather, when a child turns 13, the parents have a choice to have their child unwound. The parents have until the child turns 18, when they become a legal adult, to make this choice. Being unwound is where a person’s organs are harvested and put to use in someone else. The trick about this bill is that 100% of the person must be used. If a person is used 100%, then the person is not technically dead, and are living in a “divided state” instead. This satisfied both sides of the argument. However, the children are the ones who are left to deal with being casted as an “unwind.” The book doesn’t revolve around one person, but rather several. These characters are escaping their fates and dealing with a society that doesn’t seem them as anything but troublesome and could be put to better use in someone else’s body.As you can see, this is a very unique story. In my opinion, I believe that this book is a reflection of current day issues that we battle with in our society, specifically the issues of abortion, life, death, the right to live, being pro-choice, and the modernization of medicine. I don’t want you walking away thinking that this book will try to persuade you one way or another, because thats not what the story does. It will leave your own opinions intact. I believe Shusterman did a good job in finding a balance in a delicate issue. This was merely a story about a group of teenagers having to deal with the cards that they have been dealt. For me, what I got out of the story was that the way that our society and government is built, there are many choices that are made for us. Adults have a little bit more of a choice in what happens to them, but for teenagers, they are often found without having an opportunity to voice themselves because they are not labeled as adults. I think what happened in this book was that a group of teenagers fought to have their voices heard. They didn’t go out and start a revolution, but rather they did the best that they could with their situations. The fact that there were so many characters in the book was both a blessing and a downfall. On one had, as a reader, I was able to get different perspectives on a particular situation. You learned more tidbits from each character as the story went on. The story alternated between the same 3 or 4 characters, so you were able to return to a familiar character. However, because the perspective was continually alternating, I wasn’t able to relate to a character as much. I think I am used to so many books being written in first person. I am able to relate to them, feel the growth, and form a connection with that character. I felt myself having to work a little bit with trying to switch my mindset back to another character.Another issue I had with Unwind was with the characters themselves. The author stated that the characters were about 13- 16 years old, but they came off as 18 year olds. I sometimes feel that authors will say that their characters are a certain age but then write them to act much older in order to relate to the audience that they are writing for. I know that the prospect and fear of having your organs harvested against your will is going to be a scary experience that changes you, even ages you, but it never seemed like these characters ever had that childlike innocence to begin with. When I first heard about this book, it seemed really creepy. The cover of the book didn’t help either. I have to say, this book wasn’t that creepy at all. There’s only one scene where I felt creeped out. I’m not going to give that scene away because I feel like you just have to read it in order to know what I mean. I also thought that the book was going to be a little bit more fast paced. The story seemed to drag a little bit in the middle, but the ending made up for it. I especially loved the ending, and I would have been more than okay with that being the ending to the entire story. There are two more books in the story called Unwholly and Unsouled. The cover to Unsouled especially creeps me out!I really liked this book. I have to say, if you decide to read it, don’t expect it to be like a typical dystopian book, because thats not what it is! You’ll just have to dive into the book and prepare for a unique experience.

I first heard about this book from Shusterman himself at an NCTE conference, as he talked about his inspiration for it: a combination of a bible story, the ongoing abortion debates, and an issue in London at the time of conceiving the idea for this story with "feral" teenagers roaming the streets. The concept itself was interesting enough, but Shusterman's expert craft takes it further and makes it a book that has stuck with me over the years. The characters are realistic, and flawed. At points, they aren't likable. Their various stories take the reader through the process of really considering the value of human life and hoe er handle it. It forces the reader to ask themselves hard questions as the characters are doing the same, and at the same time gives teenagers a sense of agency to stand up for what they know is right. This is the kind of book I would want my children studying in a classroom.

A fantastic start to a fantastic series. The Unwind Dystology is my favorite book series, and it all started with Unwind back in high school. I loved it then, but I love it even more since the series has been completed.Unwind is an emotional rollercoaster that gets more intense with each book you read. I cheered for these kids on their journey, wanting nothing more than for them to survive. Neal Shusterman does a great job with his characters and world building. I was very invested in both right from the get go and all the way to the end. This book is also scary. I love fiction for the escape, but fiction like this is my favorite because it’s right on the cusp of reality. It makes you think and consider things maybe you wouldn’t have if you hadn’t read it.This is the book that shot Neal Shusterman up to my #1 favorite author. It’s been that way for years now. I buy his books on the day they are released.

Live in the Balance: The Ground-Breaking East-West Nutrition Program, by Linda Prout

From Publishers Weekly

Prout, a nutritionist at the Claremont Resort and Spa in Berkeley, Ca., believes that people could lose weight and improve their general health by modifying their Western diet to include the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM is based on the principles of balance (yin-yang) and Qi, which the Chinese believe is our vital life force. Key to the success of TCM, she explains, is understanding one's "pattern of imbalance" (e.g., "dry," "damp," "warm," "cool") and personalizing one's diet to maintain healthy equilibrium or "strong spleen Qi." Nevertheless, Prout acknowledges that "it is likely that you will have combinations of more than one pattern," and even if a person is balanced, he or she can experience periods of imbalance (e.g., PMS, insomnia, depression, bloating). Though her explanations are sensible and she offers considerable anecdotal evidence, readers not well-versed in Eastern thought may be overwhelmed by the inordinate details of TCM (e.g., the five elementsAwood, fire, metal, water and earthAof nutrition, climate, food colors, etc.) and how to use them. To ease confusion, Prout recommends the best foods for particular patterns of imbalance and offers considerable anecdotal evidence. Unfortunately, impatient readers who are used to opening a typical Western diet book that spells out exact menus for every meal every day may dismiss Prout's recommendations. (Jan.) I purchased this book on the recommendation of my acupuncturist. I've been suffering from a variety of digestive issues, and other unexplained health symptoms. No other piece of literature (including the web) has offered me as much information on how to figure out what foods I, as an individual, need to stay 'in balance' - and what I should be avoiding or preparing differently before consuming. The East-West Nutrition Program" is a fitting subtitle because this book helps the average person grasp the concepts of traditional Chinese medicine in context with what we (or at least I) spent a lifetime knowing from the Western medicine context. I feel better than I have in 3 years and have shared this book with my son who has similar and different digestive/health issues, has modified his diet and is feeling better as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who feels they've reached a dead end with regard to resolving digestive (and other) issues. You have nothing to lose with this non-medicinal approach.

Oh my goodness. Where do I begin to say how much this book has helped me and my husband. We wereliving at the coast in San Diego where we had the May Grey, June Gloom weather. It wasn't a problem inour earlier years but by middle age, bad eating habits, overweight, lethargy, breathing problems we were ready to tryjust about anything new.Well, this book changed our lives because we could recognize ourselves in her descriptions and see the results of me being a Damp Heat and my husband Damp Cold. It all made sense. We changed our eating habits, moved to Palm Springs a dryer climate and now are a lot happier. We still aren't perfect but we are better than we were and every time I look at Linda's book I amreminded of the wisdom of both East and West and that I have the correct tools to apply. There is so much information in this book. It's one to keep as a reference. Thank you Linda for this change of life book and your dedication to optimal health.

This book explains fairly simply the philosophy behind Chinese/Eastern medicine. At the time, I was getting acupuncture, and my Chinese Dr was telling me things that I wanted to know more about. This book helped elucidate my treatments.Thank you!

I published a long review of the book on my web site, but to put it simply, this book could change your life. Anyone with even a passing interest in diet and nutrition will find it enjoyable and educational. It is a must read if you have any health or medical issues or if you are at all frustrated with your current eating patterns. The book is full of information, with every sentence seeming to contain a new nutritional idea or fact. All the facts and figures are incredibly well researched and documented. If you are new to the concepts in the book, you will find it easy to follow and understand. If you are already well versed in the Traditional Chinese approach to diet and nutrition you will find it a wonderful source of new information and a great addition to your reference shelf.

Excellent book

On the urging of my doctor to get my blood pressure and cholesterol down or face a lifetime of taking drugs, I went on Linda's program with amazing success. In 6 weeks of eating by her prescription in the book my BP went from 144/94 to 130/80 and my Cholesterol from 264 to 208. And my appetite is completely under control for the first time in my 44 years. I have lost weight, inches and my skin is clear and glowing. And I have escaped getting the colds that have plagued everyone around me at work. I find it easy to eat her way with a bit of planning. My doctor is amazed at the change in my health. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with overall health and weight problems. It's the first thing that has worked for me.

The author of this book provides extensive information about how to balance your diet from a combined Western/Asian perspective, however, the book would be more useful if she had provided comprehensive summaries of the information. She does give short summaries of specific sections, but since a lot of the information applies to several aspects of a person, a quick reference summary of types of people and their corresponding needs/solutions would be helpful. You are going to have to compile this for yourself, and it will be time consuming. I do think she gives useful information here though, so I would recommend this book.

About four years ago I was very ill. I had sinus infections, colds, and bronchitis just about every month for about a year and a half. I was stressed out at work and in my personal life, put on 30 pounds, and developed GI problems doctors were unable to explain. Tired of traditional western medicine prescribing costly drugs which made no difference and constantly being sick, tired, and unable to focus, I decided to consult a holistic healthcare practitioner. Unable to pay the cost to have a formal in person consultation (since my healthcare did not cover it), she referred me to this book.I felt like Linda Prout was reading my mind. Although the food choices she recommended were not at all what I was used to eating, I decided to give it a try. Within the first week I noticed a difference in how I felt. I lost 20 pounds in the first three months (without exercising) and have maintained a healthy weight since, with regular exercising and meditation. I eliminated stressors in my life as well. This book in so many ways saved my life. I have not been sick at all for the past three years. The acute asthma I developed at that time is nearly nonexistent. I enjoy the foods Linda suggests for my body type and have minimized the others which are not so good. I love it and swear by it!

About the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too.  Though Stan died in 2005, and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from his studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country.

I'm sorry to say that the Bear family just hasn't been the same since Stan passed away. I ordered this book because this is a lesson my 8 year old needs to be reminded of lately, and the Bear books often motivate him to make better choices (I'm going to watch less TV, eat less junk food, make a chore list!) They teach a moral through a fun story, but are also very direct and clear in their message. This story fails to do that.Summary:The bear family, with Gran and Gramps, are looking for the perfect picnic spot.It gives examples of disrespect ranging from mild (interupting, not listening) to really mild ( practically stating an opinion/disagreeing.)Example: Mama Bear suggests they go to the nice spot by the pond where she and papa had their first date. Brother says "That was an awful long time ago. It's full of mosquitos now. Let's find a better spot." And it IS full of mosquitos. Still, Mama is "none too pleased" with Brother Bears act of disrespect.Gramps calls them out on their disrespect. They are sorry. The end.So-1. Many of the examples of "disrespect" weren't relevant to my family or didn't really exemplify disrespectful behavior, at least not the kind i'm trying to address. (Above.) And the story never really explained WHY these behaviors were disrespectful, so I had to fill in with a lot of discussion. Like in the example above, I explained that Brother could have noted that there were a lot of mosquitos and then ASKED if they could keep looking.2. Because of these stated opinions being used as illustrations of disrespect, this book almost gives a feeling of "children should be seen and not heard." It doesn't say that, but if disagreeing with a parent over a picnic spot (even with good reason) is disrespect, then it just kind of feels that way. Now, if Brother had proceeded to argue, whine, cry, and yell (as MY little cub has been known to do)...3. Some of the examples were more obvious, such as not listening (only once) or interupting. That was a good start.4. The older Bear books would have done a good job of explaining the problem (disrespect) and solutions in a more concrete and developmentally appropriate way. This book just relies on bible quotes to illustrate the point. Gramps finally gets fed up and points out that they haven't been showing respect to their elders. (He never specifies why, so hopefully your kids already got that point.) They all think about it and agree. (Again, no further explanation as to what was disrespectful or why.) He reminds them that "Age should speak, advance years should teach wisdom....A wise son heeds his fathers instruction." Hmm. Okay.5. The story itself wasn't as interesting as some of our other ones. That said, I still was able to use it as a teaching tool, but i had to do a lot of work filling in the lines, so to speak. It at least got a conversation going. It's not so bad that i won't ever read it to them again.

I'm so very sad that these books are so incredibly terrible now. I LOVED the Berenstain Bears growing up. They were obviously morality stories but they were awesome stories as well, and very cute. This book was just awful. I got it thinking I'd use it with my kids to help gently teach them respect. The book ONLY talks about respect to your elders, not to each other, not to your siblings. And it uses Bible verses to explain why--you don't respect people because it's the right thing to do, or because being respectful is kind. Nope, you do it because a Bible verse says you have to. I'm Christian, I have no problem using some Biblical teachings. But that's not the ONLY reason I think people should be respectful toward each other, and it's really not the message I want to send my kids. The book was only $3 but I really hate that I even spent that much on this drivel. :( I'm going to see if I can get some of the old books from Goodwill or somewhere, they were so sweet and cute before whoever is writing them now ruined them :(

I love the Berenstain Bear books! This one is about being respectful to elders. I feel like the point was a little short of being made, though. I don't think my 7 & 9 year olds even got the lesson, unfortunately. There were definitely a few laughs in the book, but the Bible quotes used were too hard for kids to grasp in my opinion.

My family really loves the Berenstain Bears collection. The kids really enjoy the hearing the stories at night before bed. My wife and I really enjoy the fact the book is entertaining and educational. Each book shares a nice life lesson that's important and easy to understand. They aren't so long that the kids lose interest, but they are long enough to help the kids settle down at night. I would recommend these stories for kids 4-10.Pros: Great message, entertaining, right lengthCons: N/A

I hadn't realized that it was a religious book. If you are anything other than Christian, don't buy it. If you are Christian, it's a 5 star book.

As with most Berenstein Bear books, it teaches children important lessons. Great color and cute illustrations! Perfect for young children!

The book is great for teaching children how the should act and be. With all the negative media and news, this book is a great tool to teach right and wrong.

What I liked about it-Good topicInteresting enough story for young kids (my son is almost 5)picturesWhat could have been improved-examples of disrespectpictures should be bigger with the words over them, so kids can see them as you read. My son did not bother looking at the pictures, because they were too small. This book was definitely worth the .99 cents I paid for it.

I love to simply open this book randomly and savor an entry or two. It's slowly expanding my ability to read landscape. It's also just a quiet joy to read.I'd like to use it as a reference as well, but it needs more complete indexing for that purpose. It does have an index of place names mentioned, which is wonderful. I'd also like to be able to easily locate words by subject (mountain words, river words, etc.)

When I first got my hands on this beautiful book, I'd barely read a page before I started to cry. Barry Lopez, Debra Gwartney, and more of the best writers of our day have saved what I didn't even realize I was losing. I've often felt, when near an exotic Asian or spicy islander that being an American, especially a Midwesterner, meant I had no culture. The United States was developed under the influence of a vast wild land, a land to conquer. We tore down and built up, paying little attention to what we destroyed. I wonder if that accounts for empty Americans trying to fill themselves up with stuff? But the U. S. isn't only about development and acquisition. Home Ground preserves the culture and language of our landscape."we will conserve only what we lovewe will love only what we understandwe will understand only what we're taught"Baba Dioum, SenegalThe marginalia literature quotations and the descriptive entries bind place to culture. Because I do feel a connection to the landscapes I have known, this book reminds me that I am a part of a culture that has a language. A language we might have lost.

This book is a must read for an avid outdoorsman/hunter/fisherman such as myself. When hunting all over the country, terms for many land features vary widely, and this helps navigate through local vernacular.

If I have one complaint about this book (which is really an encouragement) it's that it could be much larger. Each one of the contributing authors (and some who were not tapped into) could add many more words, and hopefully will in an expanded edition at some point. I've started with Pattiann Rogers and am adding well-loved words from her poetry collection along the margins (which are wide and mostly empty and beg to be written upon). Words such as staub, vine maple, flotsam--I could go on and on. I intend to make this book my one-stop wordshop; it will be messy, and personalized, and uncollectable by the time I'm done with it.There's a reason everyone who has reviewed it has given it five stars; it's a thought-provoking read; a great start in our search for a lexicon to describe our landscape and our lives; a book to be kept by your reading/writing chair and referred to and used forever and ever. And, as I mentioned, the contributing authors (Kittredge, Barnes, Hass, Rogers, and other western writers/poets not included) are worth reading through again and again with this book, and a pen, in hand--it's a good beginning.

Love this book. Not a book I'd sit down and read cover to cover, but nice to peruse when the spirit moves me.

Great guide for Geography or Earth Science students, or for anyone who is interested in landscape formation.

I skim this in the AM with my coffee.

brilliant idea and satisfying to read.
