This is an excellent biography of Mozart. Very detailed, with great insights into his life and why he did things the way he did. He was one of the great composers of all time, some say the greatest. I gained a different perspective about the man, and was inspired by how much music he wrote in spite of many hardships. To do so much music in such a short life is amazing.
This book brought me close to Mozart and his unique life. Loved it!
The writing is quaint and sentimental. Davenport dramatizes Mozart's life which I dislike. She doesn't really know if Mozart paced the room or stamped his foot or frowned at so and so when saying such and such. I understand the reason for writing like this i.e. trying to make the subject come alive to the reader, but it creates a false image. Not my favorite biography, but has good information of the composer. I would not rely solely on this biography. Robert Gutman's biography goes into much greater detail and is by far more scholarly.
Detailed bio with interesting facts. Readswell. A lot of info without being wordy.
My wife and I will read it together and most likely enjoy it in the same way as we do "Valley of Decison" Another account of Mozart is Eduard Mörike's "Mozart auf der Reise nach Prague". At this time, March 1, we have not read it. Enjoy reading "Mozart"if you have already started.
Ms. Davenport is not exactly a household name for readers. I discovered her by reading the book by A.Scott Berg, " Max Perkins: Editor of Genius." which brought back to life the great forgotten editor who worked for Scribners for most of his professional life, and had an uncanny ability to discover great writers, Marcia Davenport being one of the select chosen. She wrote several books for them, and reveals in her autobiography, "Too Strong for Fantasy", her love and gratitude toward Mr. Perkins. Her mother was a well known opera star, and her circle of friends included The Maestro Toscanini , the legendary conductor. Her knowledge of music therefore was extraordinary from attending hundreds maybe thousands of concerts around the world. Her favorite place in the world besides New York, was Prague. Just coincidentally the people of Czechoslovakia for some reason went absolutely wild over Mozart's "Don Giovanni", when the German and Austrian audiences barely clapped being partial to Italian composers. Mozart became the Mick Jagger of the era, and tales of his genius started to spread. I guess they all forgot that he was playing at the age of 4, on the road all the time with his sister and father. So having sailed through Ms. Davenport's autobiography, which was riveting (I wouldn't mind having a party with Einstein very timidly asking if he could sit it on the violin much to the pain of Toscanini and others), I jumped to "Mozart." Another fantastic read, and what makes it even more fantastic is you can listen to the pieces on your cell phone or IPad next to you as they are all posted on YouTube. Not being familiar with classical music, but very familiar with jazz and popular music, this for me was quite a journey. The "Jupiter Symphony" absolutely blew me away. Her description of some of the concerts (back in the 1700's) leaps off the page with her enthusiasm and marvelous fluid way with words. Whether you are a concert goer or not, this is a fabulous book that made me sorry when it ended. I only wish I could relate my experience to Ms. Davenport who died a while ago. I often do that when I am so taken with a book, and again through the miracle of the internet, I have been able to send a note and get a response in most cases. Many of her books are out of print and still available through Amazon in the used section. My copy is used "Like New" and was $7.00- another internet miracle, used books on demand.
I own the Dorset Press hardcover version of this book (1987) which features a great and rare pastel of Mozart on the dust jacket. In fact, I got a steal on this edition (in new condition) at the local Goodwill Store for a dollar! This book is for the layperson and not the Mozart scholar. I don't mean to say that it's not authoritative as the bibliography includes 70 sources. Still, Davenport dispensed with bothersome footnotes and simply focused on telling the story of Mozart. The original of this book was published by Scribners in 1932. I wasn't bothered by this detail in that a 1932 biography of a man who was born in 1756 is probably nearly as good as a 2008 one.As I read, I realized that Marcia Davenport fitted her readers quite effectively for Mozart's shoes, and then she takes us for a nice walk though his life. Here's an illustrative quote from page 259:"In the reaction from his bitter disappointment, Wolfgang expressed himself, for the first time in three years, in a symphony. Into it he poured that intensely serious and vital force which permeated his three subsequent symphonies and culminated in the Olympian Jupiter, his last. After the cruel blow from Leopold [his father], he withdrew into himself, temporarily, but definitely enough to learn how lonely the soul becomes before it comes to create the immortal."Mozart was a fascinating personality... prodigy, genius, procrastinator, disorganized, compassionate playmate, fancy-free, and yet shackled by the stiff German culture of his era, as well as by his burdensome father. His later life was fraught with worries about debt and many of his career opportunities were train-wrecked by both jealous peers and by the indifference of the presiding royals, the latter of whom utterly failed to recognize his worth to society. The book is 400 pages in length, including the index, and some of Mozart's letters and scores are illustrated for empasis of particular points which the author makes. From this volume, I learned the story (and chiefly the lifelong anguish) of Mozart. And while this book was not written for the Classical Music scholar, I still found that it more than met my expectations. It's not a page-turner but it is solid and coherent.Recommended.
