This is one of the rare craft books I own where every project inspires me. Thanks to the popularity of wet felting and nuno felting, there are now scores of books on both topics, and I own several of them. This one stands out. The focus goes beyond making simple items to creating felted fashion. It contains clear instructions about basic and advanced techniques, but the real focus of the book is on adding creative touches to both the fabric and the cut of the finished items. It's a great book for both new and experienced felters and won't move to the back of your bookshelf.

1. Although the book contains how to make felt don't think that's enough for learning it! It's a book for people with at least basic wet felting know how. (I always advice learning the basics live and after that you may develop with other tutorials.)2. You have to read this book for the informations because there are pictures of ready felts and only a few drawings to understand the constructions, no step by step photos. But that's absolutely ok an enough! There are templates of a few jackets, shawls, hats and details like making pockets, seams; and you learn how to make templates like these.3. You can learn nuno felting by following the descriptions. My conclusion: If you want to learn how to felt clothes and you already know how wet felting works, first try it with this book instead of travelling far and visiting an expensive course. (You can do this later if this book isn't enough or you want to know more.)Only 4 stars because it's a pity that there is only one photo showing how a felt coat looks on a person. Every other coat is shown only layed down flat or hung.

It is inspirational but there are just a few details on techniques and materials. For a novice, this is not a helpful book in terms of "how to" but but a great "want to" book.. Previous reviewers are correct that this is more of a gallery of projects.

This is an inspiration book, NOT a DIY book.while techniques and occasional how to do its get mentioned, this is a book of inspiration and "who is who" in felting. I have been completely thrilled with this book, but do NOT buy it expecting a "how you as a beginner can do this" if you want that kind of book i suggest Uniquely Felt.Truly inspiring for those of us who felt, and a glorious picture book for people who do not...For people who love textiles and fashion this will be an inspiration for years! i strongly recommend it.

This book is nothing more than grandma's "brag" book. The book does not contain inspirational and creative techniques for felters. It contains many photos of the authors work, which in my opinion is not masterful. The flower and the spiky brooch look like student work. The instruction is non-existent with the exception of a few line drawings.Without Nuno felting listed in the title, I was also chagrined to find that a good porton of this book delt with this topic. This was a disappointment, There are precious few good felting books out there and this is not one of them.

The photographs beautifully show the richness of the felting and the designs are very inspiring; the author clearly loves her work. The instructions, however, are spotty especially for the garments. Some are gratefully clear and given slowly step-by-step; others (the more intricate) are disappointingly missing. Ex: instructions for a lovely Nuno-felt jacket with collar start with basic how-to steps involving what by 3/4 through the book are obvious but fails to even suggest how to make the collar. It strikes me as odd that the author is clear and repetitive with basic steps only to seemingly assume the reader would know how to do the harder parts. It leaves me feeling as though I was given a recipe but a few essential ingredients have been purposefully left out.Visually I often treat myself to studying the photos. Heart be still!

This book is a wealth of info of all the felting books I've purchased. It also includes patterns. I am very happy with this book and will keep it in my library forever!

Thoroughly inspirational.Vivid photos, excellent descriptions. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to take their felting projects to the next level.

This is a great book to learn FileMaker Pro 10.That having been said I would like to say that FileMaker Pro has really missed the boat with their product. Here they put all of this time and effort in to making a great product and then they make it so you can't really use it easily with the internet. Profit is the only motivating factor here. The reason I bought FileMaker Pro 10 (and this book) was because I read that it would set up an entire website based on what you did with FileMaker Pro 10. That it would use MySQL, PHP, and you basically didn't have to write any code. Just build the database and screens to access the screens and FileMaker Pro would handle the rest. This is where this book has been invaluable to me. I skipped back to the part where it talks about interfacing to the internet and guess what? According to the book - it only works with its own database and they state, in the book, that FileMaker Pro's web server feature crashes a lot.So I am very glad I got this book because it has shown me just how bad FileMaker Pro 10 really is and I don't need to spend my time trying to learn a program that just doesn't "GET IT" when it comes to working with the internet.

The Missing Manual series is, overall, quite good with few misses. "FileMaker Pro 10 - The Missing Manual" is no exception to the generally high quality of the series. I've used FileMaker since its very first version when it was produced by a company called Nashoba Systems. FileMaker has always been an excellent product, but with each new version, new features add another level of complexity. The early Nashoba and Apple documentation was excellent, but bit by bit the standards slipped. Printed manuals gave way to online help. A mini-industry developed as publishers introduced new titles. It was never a tsunami, but there were a number of books on various aspects of FileMaker, some very well developed references. The Missing Manual neatly fills the gap. Starting with the basics, you are guided through the basics in the first three chapters. In reality, many people will not need to go beyond this point. There's enough here to get you through the creation and maintenance of simple FileMaker databases. Beginning with Chapter 4, on layouts, your knowledge will quickly expand. FileMaker was among the first, if not the first, microcomputer database product to allow you to design layouts to meet your needs. Since those early days, the power of the FileMaker layout engine has grown almost beyond comprehension. You can create whatever layout meets your needs - and you can have multiple layouts per database. The Missing Manual does a superb job of showing you how to create very sophisticated layouts. It is important to understand that a FileMaker layout differs considerably merely creating a user interface: in FileMaker, the various fields are also components of the database. For example, for summaries, you use a particular field and have to create a formula to manage it. The Missing Manual explains all this quite nicely. The remaining nine chapters lead you into more complex areas of database design in general and FileMaker in particular. In order, the chapters cover using multiple tables and relationships and then advance relationship techniques. These can be difficult concepts to grasp and even more difficult to implement. The book helps you along, though it doesn't really get into very complex relationships. The next four chapters cover calculations. You can create FileMaker fields that perform virtually any computational task. One of the reasons I've used FileMaker for so many years is because I can use it to rearrange, recombine, sort and do all manner of things with text. Though I don't it use it much for mathematical calculations, it has every function you might reasonably need. Obviously because four chapters are devoted to it, there's a lot to FileMaker calculations and the book is thorough in its approach. Two chapters on scripting follow. Over the years, FileMaker scripting has progressed from being a hair-pulling experience to being occasionally frustrating. If you're developing databases that must perform for relatively unskilled users, scripting is a must. Only your imagination and the sometimes confusingly documented or undocumented FileMaker feature set will stop you. The last four chapters are the ones that will be the least used. Most people simply will not need information on adding security to your database, sharing data with other systems, sharing the database itself and using developer utilities. Overall, "FileMaker 10 - The Missing Manual" follows its earlier editions in being almost a model for a solid technical manual. If you own FileMaker 10, you need this book. It is not the only FileMaker book you'll need, since there are others that are more suited to the reference role, but it is essential.Jerry

I've been using Access (and other databases) for many years and have now switched back to a Mac. Needing a good database, I got stuck in to Filemaker and found this manual a good introduction. It is very readable and will take you through from the basics to a building a reasonably complex application. If you're looking for a basic introduction to Filemaker, it's excellent -- if you're looking for a really in-depth application builder manual, I'd say that you might find the information here, but it will probably require significant digging to find it. There's at least one other manual which will help better with application building.

If you are new to this product or have been through the updated versions of Filemaker over the years this book is a must. For the novice, it explains in plain language, how to set up and use this powerful program and get you up and running with well explained examples and screen shots and exercises. It gets one off and running and gathering understanding very quickly. It logically and simply moves the reader into databases with real examples. For the seasoned expert, it is an excellent reference of the functionality and advanced techniques that will make your databases perform even better. The new features and functionality that have come with each Filemaker version are fully explained. I personally have found in a few weeks great improvements to old techniques and approaches that I either misunderstood or wasn't aware of. Well thought out examples and explanation of the steps for even the most complex functions help guide the reader .Whilst Filemaker is a very powerful program, it most forgiving of sloppy database design. However the better the design, the better for both user and developer. The tools for this are available in Filemaker but not adequately discussed in my view. The chapter on Relationship graphs, table occurrences and techniques to work with relationships and keeping them simple and understandable is too focused on 'how to implement' in Filemaker rather than understanding design and how it can be organised, approached and improved. It could be argued this is not the books purpose, however good design benefits the approach and using Filemaker's functionality.Filemaker Pro 10 - The Missing Manual is a well thought out, easy to understand text that explains how to use the program to its fullest extent and make your information more manageable, no matter what you are using Filemaker for.

Herodotus: The History, by Herodotus

Amazon.com Review

Herodotus of Halicarnassus was born about 484 B.C. and died some 60 years later. He traveled over much of the known ancient world, making trips to places such as southern Italy, lower Egypt, and the Caucasus. His great History, the first major prose work in world literature, is an account of his world at the time of the Persian Wars. The book, here ably translated by University of Chicago scholar David Grene, earned Herodotus the epithet "The Father of History" in ancient times. He distinguishes between the things seen with his own eyes and those of which he had only heard. But he was often too credulous of things told to him by his peers along the way, for which reason his younger contemporary Thucydides called him "The Father of Lies." Renowned in his own time for his humanity and wide-ranging curiosity, Herodotus shows an insatiable appetite for both useful information and a good yarn, and The History is a starting point for any student of the past.

I'd rather not try to write a detailed summary of this translation of Herodotus, because essentially it would read as a blanket criticism of David Grene's slavish tenacity to the original Greek text.In many ways faithful adherence to the original is desirable, but interference with readability can be the result.I have read through to the end, persevering through my frequent side trips to reference works to amplify my flagging comprehension and gain a broader understanding of the god-myths, divine/human interaction, and historical and sociological settings.I'm going to read another translation and will keep the readers posted about ease and flow of the prose. This translation is neither eased nor does it flow, except in excessive switchbacks. That is what Herodotus wanted: to provide the report of events as well as the reasons for their happenings.

David Grene's translation of Herodotus' "The History" is a good version of the Greek historian's magnum opus. The Introduction provides context for the translation to come. It is useful and functional, although Knox' introductions to The Iliad and The Odyssey (Fagles' translations) strike me as better at putting the work in its place. Nonetheless, the Introduction is serviceable. Grene notes of Herodotus' work that" "There are two worlds of meaning that are constantly in Herodotus' head. The one is that of human calculation, reason, cleverness, passion, happiness. There, one knows what is happening and, more or less, who is the agent of cause. The other is the will of Gods, or fate, or the intervention of daimons."In the History itself, Herodotus ranges widely geographically, and considers many different countries. With these, he discusses in detail such varied matters as hygiene, sex, culture, animals, religion, geographical features, and so on. He appears to have tried to ascertain as best as he could what the actuality was and what hearsay or rumor was. One of the more interesting examples of this is his effort to understand the role of Helen in the Trojan War (2, 120). Here, he doubts the veracity of Homer's rendering of the causes of the war. He believes that Helen never did go to Troy, because Priam would not have been willing to risk his empire over one woman. At other places, he clearly states the different versions of some incident and then renders his own best judgment as to what he thought the reality was. In short, he did not simply retell tales that he heard. When he is not sure what actually happened, he says so (e.g., 1, 49; 1, 75).In the end, Herodotus has done a great service for many generations, by putting down, as best he could, his understanding of the history of the various actors of his time and before. The reader will find it difficult to keep all the people and countries straight. The volume features a useful set of maps, providing a sense of the different countries mentioned, as well as the travels of armies on conquests. The book moves ahead in a majestic trajectory to ultimately describe the Persian-Greek War, with Xerxes leading his great force into Greece. Herodotus provides detail on many aspects of this conflict, which the Greeks eventually won, after battles at Thermopylae, Salamis, and Platea. For an early effort at history, Herodotus' work is important to be aware of. And Grene's translation makes the work accessible to readers today.

Reviewing a classic, one can either focus on its translation and production, since the work itself is taken to be a "known quantity," or one can boldly assume (what is probably the truth) that even most interested customers don't much know the known quantity, and review the book itself. I won't say much about the former, not having read this book in Greek, other than noting that this translation read well, footnotes were helpful, and the maps at the end were mostly useful as well. But Herodotus himself is much more interesting than the logistics that bring him to us, as I'm sure Dr. Grene would admit. (If he didn't, he would have no business translating the man!)The word I am tempted to use is "gossipy." Herodotus has some notion of objective history, but seldom lets it get in his way of telling us something interesting. It is really quite astounding how many stories he has obtained. He must have traveled around the Mediterranean with a notebook in his hands all the time. Of course some of those stories -- no, many of those stories - are spurious. But Herodotus almost never bores his reader. (A sin that, to my mind, is worse than passing rumors, for an historian who tips his hand sometimes about which are the weaker rumors he's passing along.) So we get all kinds of great stuff about weird sexual, burial, and life-style habits, descriptions of rivers and odd Rick Steve snippets from the tourist trail or way off it, and yes, the occasional Harry Potteresque accounts of revivified fish or temples that defend themselves from the Persians. And yet you get the overwhelming impression that most of what the man recounts actually happened. Maybe there is a place for this sort of romantic, swashbuckling version of history: even World War II might gain from such an account. This is history before it was sterilized: plus you get the 300, Marathon, the Battle of Salimas, all that good stuff that actually happened. For those who like to debate ancient history, say for the perennial debates between Christians and skeptics, Herodotus is one of those "background works" that you cannot do without. But this is more dessert than medicine.Next up: Thucydides, though I doubt I'll enjoy him as much.
