I'm such a big Hank fan...I own most if the books and movies and documentaries and music that's been published. After this many years it's not often I come across something I haven't read before about him. I got some stuff in this book. And I really didn't think much of Hank 3. But the lengthy interviews with him. He is so unguarded and honest. It's sweet and endearing just like his Granddad. I know people get caught up in his similar looks. Which is neat but that is a gimmick. There is something special about him and it's very familiar. As for BoStupid jr. Um I didn't even believe Hank was his biological father until I saw his his his son (hank 3). Interesting book.
NOTE: THE FOLLOWING IS A BRIEF REVIEW OF THE BOOK:This is the first book to address all 3 Hanks (Hank Sr., Hank Jr. & Hank III) collectively, in just one book. The author did a fantastic job of telling the story of all three Hanks. In the book's introduction the author writes about the movie "Your Cheatin' Heart - The Hank Williams Story", and in this book the author separates fact from fiction. Amazon has this movie "Your Cheatin' Heart" available on DVD, and personally as a reviewer, I highly recommend it. Although not completely true to life, it is still the closest portrayal of the Hank Williams Sr. story available. Also in the "Intro", the author gives a brief introduction of Hank Sr., Hank Jr. & Hank III. This book is packed with information on all three Hanks. As the author states in this "Intro": "Within these pages you will find the real story of the legacy of Hank Williams Sr., Hank Jr. and Hank III, three generations of outlaws, whose songs have shaped and battled - country music for over sixty years." (Actually, I believe they have baffled country music for a lot more than sixty years.)NOTE: ONLY IF YOU WANT A MORE DETAILED REVIEW OF THE DETAILS IN THIS BOOK, YOU CAN READ THE REST OF THIS REVIEW:This book starts off with the original Hank Williams, (Hank Sr.). The author, Susan Masino, brings new insights into the Hank Sr. story. Things such as Hank developed a drinking problem early on in his career, and he was fired from his first professional performing job on WSFA Radio Station in Montgomery. However, he was so popular, that WSFA re-hired him. As this author points out, along with other authors, Hank Sr. was born with a back problem in his spine, called "spina bifida occulta". Hank experiened severe back pain throughout his life, thus leading to his addiction to alcohol & painkillers. This back condition that Hank had was either impossible or very difficult to diagnose & treat during Hank's life. So, this explains why Hank drank so much, which is now very understandable. The book covers in detail about Hank meeting his first wife "Miss Audrey" & her daughter Lycrecia. It covers about how Hank & Miss Audrey fell in love & how they really loved each other very much, despite the problems they would encounter later on after they married. Also, Hank was a very good father to his step daughter Lycrecia. Also it covers Miss Audrey's first husband, and how he just up and left her & vanished, leaving her & Lycrecia alone. Also it covers Hank Sr.'s last concert in Austin, Texas. This book also covers the rest of the Hank Williams Sr. story as told in other books and documentary dvd's. It covers about how Rufus Payne, a.k.a. "Tee-Tot" (a black man) was a dear friend to Hank Sr., and that "Tee-Tot" taught Hank Sr. how to play the guitar. It also covers "Tee-Tot"'s death in 1939 at a Charity Hospital in Mongomery, however, Hank Sr. didn't know he was dead, and Hank Sr. searched for "Tee-Tot", most of his life. "Tee-Tot" was a real source of inspiration, and comfort to Hank Sr. It covers Hank Sr.'s marriage to Miss Audrey, along with their good times & bad times, & their relationship troubles & their divorce. However, even after their divorce, they still had a love for each other. Also it covers Hank Sr.'s career on the Louisiana Hayride Live Radio Program on KWKH in Shreveport, Louisiana, and the birth of his son Hank Jr. there in Shreveport. Also, it covers Hank Sr.'s career with the Grand Ole Orpy, and how he was fired from the Opry for being drunk and not being able to perform regularly. It covers the various versions of the "Drifting Cowboys". To summarize & paraphrase, Hank Sr.'s life was not just full of Sadness & Gloom, he was not just "A Man of Constant Sorrow". Although Hank Sr. experienced a lot of bad times, he did experience many good times,in his short life. However, he was simply overworked in the music industry, & that along with his back problems, would probably cause professional & relationship problems for anyone. It covers Hank Sr.'s story, all the way up through his untimely early death on his way to a show on New Year's Day 1953. On p.114-115 it covers a "Love Poem", that Hank's wife "Miss Audrey" wrote to Hank. This "Love Poem" was inscribed on the back of Hank's 10 ft. Grave Monument. He is buried in Montgomery beside his be-loved first wife, Miss Audrey. She also has a matching Grave Monument. This book even covers issues involving Hank Sr. after his death, including: his induction into The Country Music Hall of Fame, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and numerous post humous awards & accolades (p.3-4). It covers the Hank Williams museaum in Montgomery, The State of Alabama "Hank Williams Memorial Lost Highway", and many, many more accolades. Also, on P.30 the author points out that many music historians consider Hank Sr's song "Move It On Over" to be the real first Rock & Roll song ever recorded. This song was latered covered by George Thorogood, who made a huge Rock & Roll Hit out of it.The book also covers Hank Sr.'s romance and "love child", with a Nashville secretary, Bobbie Jett, and their "love child", Jett Williams. Bobbie Jett had previously worked as a professional dancing in Nashville. Hank Sr.'s & Bobbie Jett's "Love Child", Jett Williams, although conceived out of wedlock, was a very welcomed & completely legitimate child. When Hank Sr. became aware that Bobbie Jett was pregnant with his child, he immediately took responsibility for her. He gladly, & voluntarily signed legal papers, claiming his fatherhood & his responsibility, over his child, Jett Williams. Jett Williams also favors Hank Williams in her looks. Also, it covers Hank Sr.'s very short 2nd marriage to Miss Billie Jean, in Minden, Louisiana. This 2nd marriage lasted only for a matter of months, and then Hank Sr. died. Although Hank Sr. re-married, I do believe his heart still belonged to his first wife, Miss Audrey.Next, the book covers the story of Hank Jr. in detail. Hank Jr. did provide a limited amount of information directly to the author. Hank Jr. has lead mostly a very private life, so information about him has been hard to come by. This new book sheds some new light into the life and story of Hank Jr. This book covers Hank Jr.'s life story, including his near fatal fall from Ajax Mountain at one of his ranches in Montana. It covers his marraiges & divorces, & his three children: Holly, Hillary, & Hank III. It covers his musical career, including his Country Music Entertainer of the Year Awards for 1986, 1987, 1988, & 1989 (p.154). It covers his grammy Award for his duet with his post humous Dad, Hank Sr. "There's a Tear in my Beer". This book covers Hank Jr.'s friendship with Kid Rock & how that friendship has caused some "friction" among Hank Jr.'s three children. It covers Hank Jr.'s participation & affiliation with Monday Night Football that went on for about two decades. However, after the publication of this book, Hank Jr. was fired from Monday Night Football, because of some negative (but truthful) comments Hank Jr. said about President Obama. Personally I think Hank Jr. was entitled to his "freedom of speach". Also, in this section it covers the "Family Tradition: The Williams Family Legacy" Exhibit, which was on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame from March, 2008 through the end of 2011. It was a very popular exhibit. Also, it covers the discovery of the WSM's Mother's Best Flour Radio morning show recordings, by Hank Sr., that were recently released for the first time. And it covers the legal battles that Hank Jr. & his half sister Jett had to go through to gain custody over them. And the book continues on & on in great detail about Hank Jr.'s life & career. Finally the last part is about Hank III, who directly participated with the author in intimate detail about his life, and his career. So, this part of the book is a very, very detailed story of the life & career of Hank III. As the author points out, when Minnie Pearl first saw Hank III, she asked him if he was a Ghost, because he looked just like his Grandad, Hank Sr. The books covers Hank III's childhood, and how he was sexually abused by a member of his Mother's side of the family. His mother and his dad, Hank Jr. went through a divorce early on in Hank III's life, so Hank Jr. was not there early on in Hank III's life. The book covers Hank III's music, including his heavy metal band "AssJack". It also covers his "regular albums" all the way up through "The Rebel Within". It covers Hank III's home in Nashville, and how it is "haunted". It covers Hank III's son. It covers how Hank III is trying to get his granddad's name restored as an official member of the Grand Ole Orpy. The book just goes on & on in detail about Hank III's life & career.Near the end of the book, the author includes a "Recommended Listening Discography" of "Singles & Albums" by Hank Sr., Hank Jr. & Hank III. The center of the book contains several great photos & illustrations. This is a very detailed book about the three generations of Hank & their "Family Tradition". I highly recommend this book for any fan of Hank Sr., Hank Jr. &/or Hank III.P.S. If you like this book and want to find out more about the Hank Williams Legacy, then I highly recommend the DVD Movie, "Your Cheatin' Heart - The Hank Williams Story", & the DVD Documentary "Honky Tonk Blues - The Hank Williams Story" (which includes live input from both Hank Jr., Hank III + "Tee Tot"'s Son). Both are carried by Amazon. Thanks, and I hope this review has been helpful.
I don't read books often but man this one was great. I was looking for a Hank Williams poster one day on amazon and this book popped up. Being a big fan of the classic and outlaw movements of country music I bought it and read the whole book in a few days cause it was so interesting! It revealed why Hank Jr and Hank 3 are at odds because of Hank Jr's relationship with Kid Rock, Hank Jr's 500 foot fall from Ajax Mountain and how it changed his life completely, I could go on forever. If you're a big fan of any of the Williams' definitely get this book. I don't like to read and I couldn't put the book down. However, if you like modern "country music" such as Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan, etc., you
I ordered this for my man who is currently locked up and he loves it! He says its a great book! Hes a huge fan of Hank 3 and Hank sr. They shipped it right to his prison.
The book was decent but could have used some more detailed information about Hank Jr. but there is a lot of good information about Hank Sr. I never read about or heard before. It would be nice to hear Hank Jr's. point of view on some of the things mentioned in the book but if you read the book you will understand why that is probably not going to happen. Hope the family eventually locks the demons in the closet and attempts to move on. Overall, I gave the book 3 stars.
Family Tradition- Three Generations of Hank = 3 generations of Awesome Outlaw Country Music; and 5 Stars for a book well written by Susan Masino! I grew up listening to my grandparents in Tennessee listening to Hank Williams; and my Dad would listen to hank Sr. on the radio also when I was in my teens. But when I got older; Hank Jr. came out with his Southern Rock/ Country Rock music and I was hooked. I still listen to his music today. A young kid I work with turned me onto Hank III; and it seems he also is continuing the Family Tradition. Susan Masino had managed to capture the background and the Family history here in this book. You read about the Highs and the Lows of the Williams clan; conflicts and some dysfunctional issues that molded these Artist to what they are today. I liked this book so well; I'm thinking of ordering Susan Masino's book she wrote about AC/DC. So to round it all up; "Move It On Over" and read this 5 Star book about the 3 Hank's; you will enjoy it very much so!
