#837,578 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Here's the thing. When you wander around the darker corners of the Kindle Freebie universe you run into some odd items. Lots of them are presented as transgressive cutting edge bizarro fiction, but they're really incoherent, childish, self-indulgent rants. With poor spelling. And bad grammar that isn't intentional. But, every now and then you hit a vein of gold. Like this. This novella is really a set of interconnected short stories that follow the devil and Jesus on a typical day. Lucifer is sauntering around town bargaining for souls, and Jesus is wandering around just sort of checking out the urban Jersey vibe, man. The writing is restrained, not gonzo, and the humor is either wickedly funny or dry as dust. Some of the best lines are deadpan throwaways. Here's the setup for a typical chapter: "It was a beautiful summer evening...birds were parlaying their crude sounds into something resembling song, small children were bludgeoning each other in a baseball game that had gone terribly, terribly wrong." Jesus encounters a crying lost child. "Hi..My name's Jesus". "Like the guy in church? ... Shouldn't you be dead?" "Clearly you've been missing catechism classes." "Huh?". Jesus babysits the kid until the kid's missing father returns. Then the kid accuses Jesus of improperly touching him. Ba-dum-dum.The book isn't sacrilegious, it's irreverent. But, it is also good humored, forgiving, and very gracious in its own explicit, scatological way. It reminds me of the kind of resigned edgy humor of Terry Southern's "Magic Christian", but with less anger and more forgiveness. It is also keenly observed, sharply written and sometimes laugh out loud funny. The phrase "down to Earth" occurs to me, and since it really is about Satan and Jesus coming down to Earth that may be the very most apt description of all.So, if you don't mind your Jesus sometimes sounding like an F-bombing slacker, this could be a happy find. Please note that I found this book while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

This went in such a different direction than I was expecting. It really made all the difference to the story. All the humor, all the engagement the story could generate, it all came down to doing something with this theme that was different while still fitting, and Gumeny actually pulled it off. Had a great deal of fun reading.

Satan's got a quota to meet and he's running behind, so quick, how much for your soul? How 'bout a taco? A Twinkie? A flying ninja monkey?Say the word, sign this paper and it can be yours. It's not like you're using it for anything, right?Meanwhile, Jesus is bummin' around, trying to commune with the masses, and he's gettin' real sick of being called a "filthy" hippie. What's a savior to do when some broad lights his only pair of jeans ablaze? Burning Levis...that's got to be some kind of sign, right?Yeah. It's a sign that people are the PITS!!!This is a series of anecdotal tales that culminate when Jesus and the Devil meet up to deliver the punchline. It's also the only book I can think of that contains the line, "Jesus kicked the cop in the nuts." Unless he does that in The Bible...I don't know. The novel is hysterically funny, and despite the setting, guaranteed one hundred percent Snooki free!

Review

“Shay’s voice is so genuine -- she practically walks off the page. This is an important book, and an incredible debut.” (Erin Entrada Kelly, Newbery Medal-winning author of Hello, Universe)“Full of heart and truth” (Angie Thomas, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Hate U Give)“Gripping from the opening line, A Good Kind of Trouble is a tender, insightful, and unique look at what it means to stand up for what you believe in and be brave. Shay is the type of heroine who inspires us all to take a stand.” (Jay Coles, author of Tyle Johnson Was Here)“Ramée effectively portrays the importance of the Black Lives Matter movement and the difficulty of navigating complex social situations while conveying universal middle school questions about friendship, first crushes, and identity. Shay’s journey is an authentic and engaging political and personal awakening.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Shayla navigates the world of middle school and the troubled world beyond with wit and endless heart. A timely, funny, and unforgettable debut about friendship, facing your fears, and standing up for what’s right.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“Reminiscent in writing style to works by Lauren Myracle and Jason Reynolds, this novel [shows] Shayla’s typical middle school problems, then switches to the very specific problems she faces as a young black girl in America…[For] middle grade readers who aren’t yet ready for Thomas’s The Hate U Give.” (School Library Journal (starred review))“Shayla’s narration is both sympathetic and acutely realistic... this is a sensitive exploration of contemporary racism and inequity for a readership not ready for Thomas’ The Hate U Give.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)

Lisa Ramee's poignant debut is a pitch perfect contemporary middle grade--reading it threw me back into the high drama of fragmenting friendships, cliques, innocent seventh grade boy problems, and Moms who draw the line at twelve year olds wearing makeup. Ramee nails the fraught nature of standing up and standing out when you're in seventh grade, along with the difficulties of negotiating mixed signals, missed cues, and misinterpretations of other people's behavior. Reading A Good Kind of Trouble, you can't help but be entirely immersed in what it feels like to be 12.But the real beating heart of this novel is Shay's budding awareness of social responsibility and political activism, and her sweet, heartfelt struggles to understand and articulate her feelings, her boundaries, and her needs clearly. As the Black Lives Matter movement gathers steam in her community, Shay is beginning to fully understand some painful realities about the world, and the way those realities can cause stresses in the community and even in the most solid of friendships. This beautiful story is so honest about the frictions and difficulties and hard choices Shay has to make. You'll cry, cheer, and applaud her courage and newfound maturity. I would seriously recommend this book for every middle grade reader and classroom. It's important and timely and hopeful and very, very moving.

Quick to read, hard to put down, and I can already tell that it will stay with me forever. I loved the story so much. Shayla (and her friends & family) are wonderful characters. The writing is honest and perfectly true-to-life, and also very funny at times. I consider it a MUST READ, both for its frank discussion of Black Lives Matter and for its on-the-nose portrayal of Shayla growing up and learning to think "out loud." Shayla’s family is one of my favorites of all time. Highly recommended. I loved it!

A beautifully written, important book that follows Shayla as she navigates a new school, changing friendships, and becoming more aware of the injustices of the world. Through it all, she is supported by her incredible family. I love the nuances of the characters, the middle grade-appropriate depiction of the harsh realities Black people face, and Shayla's courageous way of standing up for what she believes, even if it causes trouble. A must-read!

I really loved Shay’s story - she is so real, so relatable as a 7th grade girl “coming of age” in a world in which she feels both pride and confusion about being Black. While her family and community watches to see the outcome of a police shooting case, Shay herself questions the “rules” she should follow, both stated and unsaid. This is such an important book for young people to read and consider what would push them to stand up and make a statement, even if it got them in trouble. The BLM movement is also treated very sensitively - explaining the issues deftly to young readers who may not know or may have heard opposing views, without ever feeling preachy or heavy-handed.Shayla’s story is also about that difficult 7th grade year, and the changes that happen in friendships, families, and social circles during adolescence. I really appreciated the way Shayla changed the way she saw other students and even herself, based on how they treated others - I love that it is modeled here for kids to consider how they perceive and judge others. There are so many positive messages in this book, within the family dynamics (I would LOVE to meet more moms like Mrs. WIllows and Isabella’s mom!) as well as Shay’s relationships with different teachers (as a teacher myself, I really appreciated that most of her teachers were supportive and kind) and students. I can’t wait to put this book into kids’ hands - even my older 3rd graders can handle this story and NEED it, well before entering middle school.I highly recommend A Good Kind of Trouble!

This is a very special middle grade debut, and I’m grateful I got to read the ARC that the author shared with #collabookation. I absolutely loved it and will be recommending it widely! This is an enlightening, heartbreaking, important look at the impact it has on a twelve-year-old black girl to grow up seeing so many incidents in which unarmed black people are shot and killed by police officers and the police officers aren’t found guilty. This book tackles big questions about racial identity, and it raises many complicated, charged topics in an accessible way that feels just right for middle grade readers. It’s also just a fun, engaging read! The main character, Shayla, is funny and endearing. Kids are going to love reading about her empowering, relatable journey, and they’ll have a whole lot to think and talk about when they finish. Every middle grade collection NEEDS to have this wonderful book.

A Good Kind of Trouble got me in the best kind of trouble—the kind where I really should have been doing other things (work, going to bed, etc.) but I just couldn’t put the book down. It is definitely one of those just one more chapter-type of reads.I loved Shay so much and related to her completely, despite the fact that I’m decades older, of a different race and grew up in a different part of the US. Who wouldn’t relate to loving your friends but being a little jealous of them too, thinking you have the people around you all figured out but realizing maybe you don’t, wanting—no needing—to speak up for causes you believe in even if it means getting in trouble and struggling to find the courage to speak up anyway? I definitely did, and I think readers will too.Equal parts funny, frustrating and fierce, A Good Kind of Trouble is the exact kind of trouble—and triumph—the world needs right now.
