Review

“As if to prove his point, Adam Alter has written a truly addictive book about the rise of addiction. Irresistible is a fascinating and much needed exploration of one of the most troubling phenomena of modern times.” —Malcolm Gladwell, author of New York Times bestsellers David and Goliath and Outliers“Alter’s sweep is broad: He includes not just the more obvious addictive technologies such as slot machines and video games, but the whole sweep of social media, dating apps, online shopping and other binge-inducing programs. He takes in everything (which today is most things) whose business model depends on being irresistible…[An] enjoyable yet alarming book.”—Washington Post “If you can't stop checking, clicking, surfing and liking, put your device down and read Adam Alter's Irresistible, an important, groundbreaking book about why we're addicted to technology, how we got here, and what we should do next.”—Arianna Huffington, author of The Sleep Revolution and Thrive“One of the most mesmerizing and important books I’ve read in quite some time. Alter brilliantly illuminates the new obsessions that are controlling our lives and offers the tools we need to rescue our businesses, our families, and our sanity.”—Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Originals and Give and Take“This important book explores how technology keeps us hooked, why that’s destructive—and how to take back control.” — People"In this smart, sharply-argued book, Adam Alter lays out the evidence for a hidden danger in our lives: behavioral addiction. From tracking social media “likes” to counting our steps, our actions are being guided less by our own volition than by the architecture of the technologies we use.  IRRESISTIBLE is a fascinating read that will leave you enlightened — and alarmed.” —Daniel H. Pink, author of To Sell Is Human and Drive“For many, social media presents an ideal mode of expression, but it also holds the danger of becoming a crutch or – as Adam Alter’s brilliant new book illustrates – a behavioral addiction that threatens to undermine our mental health and relationships. Irresistible offers a crucial understanding of how we are psychologically tethered to our devices, along with much-needed solutions so that we can live rich, meaningful and healthy lives in an increasingly tech-driven age.” —Susan Cain, co-founder of Quiet Revolution and New York Times bestselling author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking“Adam Alter has achieved the Holy Grail: a book that’s important, insightful, and a pleasure to read. With cutting-edge research about our tech-obsessed world, he soothes us via novel solutions to wean us from our social networks, smartphones, games, fitness watches and other gadgets. He also illustrates the stakes: that these technologies are preventing us from forming meaningful relationships, raising empathetic children , and separating work from sleep and play. Irresistible is essential reading if you’ve ever wondered why some experiences are so addictive, and how to regain control of your time, finances, and relationships.”—Charles Duhigg, author of New York Times bestseller The Power of Habit “In Irresistible, Adam Alter illuminates the surprising, fascinating, and frightening biological and psychological connections between a toddler hitting every button in an elevator, a surgical patient asking for painkillers, and the millions of people hooked on Facebook. No one who has ever seen an advertisement, checked their email on a smartphone, or used the Internet will come away quite the same.”—David Epstein, author of New York Times bestseller The Sports Gene“I originally wrote this sentence on an analog word processor—that is, paper. Such was the impact of Adam Alter's meticulous research into behavioral addiction that I've become increasingly frightened of the monster that is my computer. Alter isn't an alarmist, and is evenhanded and rational in his approach toward technology, which makes his fascinating and witty book all the more powerful. In a world of ever-increasing connectivity and omnipresent screens, Irresistible is absolutely essential reading. But for your own sake, buy the paper version.” —Maria Konnikova, author of The Confidence Game and Mastermind “There could be no better guide than Adam Alter to a technological landscape that’s increasingly designed to turn us into addicts. Irresistible is both a brilliant exploration of the sometimes sinister ways we get hooked, and a manual for finding focus and human connection in the midst of it all. Your sanity will thank you for reading it.”—Oliver Burkeman, author of The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking  “Looked at your phone recently? I thought so. Our devices have become more addictive than any drug, and thanks to Irresistible, now we know why. A powerful look at how technology sucks us in, and what we can do to resist its pull.” —Jonah Berger, author of New York Times bestseller Contagious “We live in an age of addiction—seemingly benign and otherwise—and Adam Alter, mixing the latest in behavioral science with briskly engaging storytelling, wakes us to an age-old problem that has found troubling new expression in the era of ubiquitous technology. You may never look at your smartphone in the same way again.” —Tom Vanderbilt, author of Traffic and You May Also Like“Adam Alter’s brilliant book is a necessary map for navigating a digitally connected world that’s teeming with addictive temptations. It's also a crackerjack box of fascinating scientific discoveries on games, habits, and behaviors. I circled, starred, underlined, or wrote exclamation marks on basically every page.”—Derek Thompson, Senior Editor at The Atlantic, and author of Hit Makers “A provocative, clearly written book that argues new technology causes new addictions.”—Kevin Ashton, author of How to Fly a Horse“[A] superb study of Internet addiction.” –Nature   “A book [that] lives up to its title.” -New Scientist “Contains smart and fascinating analysis of how social media apps, gambling sites and computer games have been engineered to hook users.” -New Statesman (UK)“Adam Alter makes the frightening case that…modern connectivity threatens the health of not just our children, but everyone…Alter’s book is illuminating on the ways that designers engineer behavioural addiction…Fascinating.”—The Guardian  “With a background in psychology and marketing, Alter brings a specialist eye to his material, and it shows…A fascinating, salutary read…Compelling.”—The Daily Telegraph (UK)  “Digs down into exactly how technology has us hooked by tapping in to our deepest needs and desires…Irresistible brims with insightful studies, explaining arcane concepts in science and tech with great clarity.”—The Times (UK)

The writing is decent enough, but the topic is more important than the way this argument is articulated. There's a maliciousness to the way that social media and networked technologies are meant to engage users and then keep them hooked. This book could have and should have been built around really striking that chord entirely through relevant research on how corporations like Facebook, Google, Instagram, etc are doing this, but instead it's mostly anecdotal, ie, each chapter is mostly comprised of stories about goals (ie, running marathons), feedback (ie, gambling), or progress (ie, Super Mario Brothers) to show how technological addiction can work in pieces. He then sprinkles in some more hard hitting facts about contemporary implementation from those corporations. If they're doing this, I don't need anecdotes to explain goal-orientation beyond a page or so to set it up: just get to the point and then hit it home. Since they are doing this, just make the points and elaborate on them instead of making them the background to a book about a time when someone found a game was addictive or the author thought so.The cell phone is the fastest and most widespread acquisition and deployment of a single technology in the history of humanity. In a matter of decades it went from high end status symbol to currently being owned and used by half of the adults in the entire world. A quarter of the world's population are active Facebook users. What the book takes issue with is increasingly vital. When there are folks like Nicholas Carr writing deeply researched and strongly built arguments about the consequences of the interface revolution, it makes this book of anecdotes pretty meaningless. Far from a strong book on the subject and the most crucial pieces could be distilled into a single article.Hard pass.

This book was an interesting if shallow look into behavioral addiction as applied to technology, but I didn't feel like it dove into the technical side enough. I wanted to see more details about the sites, apps, and devices we use and the specific tricks they use to hook us. Instead, this book was more about the general topic of behavioral addiction, as applied to technology, and I didn't think it was particularly insightful in that. That's fine, just not exactly what I came for.

This is a well-written and entertaining, yet frightening book about how tech designers use our own evolutionary structures to get us addicted to their products. In addition to an explanation of the science behind addiction, the author uses interesting anecdotes to illustrate key points. As a result of reading this book, I've decided to be more cognizant of the time I spend on apps, social media, and just staring at my phone in general. I hope that by being able to recognize the weapons that are being used against me, I can combat them in order to take control of my own attention.

I’m a “zero email” enthusiast. I’m obsessed with getting my email inbox down to zero emails. It turns our millions of us have this same addiction. The problem with those like me who suffer with email zero is that with 300 or so emails a day, we spend so much time focused on email that we are never in the productivity zone. But my obsession with technology is far less disruptive than those with an online gambling addiction or people who are so focused on gaming that they wear diapers so they don’t need to leave the game to go to the toilet. In his new book Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked, Adam Alter looks at the age of behavioral addiction. (Hat tip to Seth Godin for alerting me to this excellent book.)This book is a must read for marketers because it clearly lays out how you can build addictive behavior into products and services. By knowing the qualities of being irresistible, you can harness that force for good… and understand when it becomes too powerful. For many people, social media, video, and smart technology takes up a third of our lives (or more). When you factor out work and sleeping, many of us aren’t leaving any time for friends and family. We “don’t have time” for that big project we’ve always wanted to do.With rules, you can manage the delugeSteve Jobs unveiled the iPad in January 2010 by saying “What this device does is extraordinary…” for 90 minutes he explained how the new iPad was the best way to interact with all kinds of digital data. He believed that everyone should own an iPad. But Steve Jobs refused to let his own kids use an iPad.A simple bit of advice Alter provides are rules for the evening. Don't look at any screens in the hour or two before bed because the blue light disrupts your body rhythms. And never, ever leave your phone in the bedroom because it is too tempting to glance at.Me? I’m doing my best to resist email zero. It’s really tough. But when I do, I can get real work done. Like write this blog post.

Typical coffee table book. Lots of pretty pictures, maybe 14 pages of double-spaced text. A useful introduction to Mars exploration and settlement for the rank beginner, but an experienced reader on Mars topics will be disappointed. Two better books for hard info would be Aldrin's Mission to Mars and Zubrin's The Case for Mars. The only real new material in this picture-book has to do with the latest robotic missions launched in the past few years, and these tidbits are only a brief two or three sentence descriptions of each mission. There are also a few one-page pieces having to do with some of the personalities working in Mars research. Three stars.

I watched the TV special and wanted to have the book. Although I do not agree with all of the plot and of the engineering of the series I do agree that "humanities" future will need to be focused there. The pictures and drawings in the book are very good.

Interested I already received it

A wonderful book on our future and Mars! Must Read!!!

This book is full of amazing pictures from mars and interesting data! a very good book!

A beautifully crafted book. Typography and page layout are both excellent. I was however disappointed that a high proportion of the content appears to have come from other readily available information, e.g. you-tube / nasa etc. I had expected a higher proportion of the text and images to relate directly to the Mars Video series, with images from same. Perhaps 30-50%. Also I'd like to have seen more graphic diagrams where appropriate. Upon arrival the dust jacket on my copy was buckled and creased inside the oversized packing box. Another slight let down for the price paid. Otherwise, looks good on the coffee table.

The hardback book even came with the cover. Good condition. Thank you.

This was the first book for me from Kim Stanley Robinson, I found it to be fascinating and filled with excitement with lots of science that would be involved with us going to Mars and lots of interesting characters involved. You also have lots of social issues that Mr. Robinson deals with, I don't always agree with him but it adds to the excitement.

The Plain Choice: A True Story of Choosing to Live an Amish Life, by Sherry Gore

Review

Sherry Gore holds nothing back in her riveting memoir, The Plain Choice: A True Story of Choosing to Live an Amish Life. Her early years revealed the cascading effect of poor choices, but the hand of God kept gently redirecting her. Sherry’s salvation came through the loving community of the Amish-Mennonite church. Her compelling story, while unique, holds a message for everyone: Nothing is beyond the redemptive power of God. (―Suzanne Woods Fisher is the bestselling author of Amish Peace: Simple Wisdom for a Complicated World)Sherry Gore’s The Plain Choice is a heartwarming story of overcoming obstacles to find peace and a place to belong. Her journey will captivate readers who love the Amish culture and enjoy spending time in the Plain community. (―Amy Clipston, bestselling author of A Gift of Grace and The Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel Series)Gore's penchant for dancing on the edge of the volcano, and her impressive ability to live to tell the tale, will keep the pages turning and leave readers eager for her next memoir. I received a copy from netgalley to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.Not all Amish or Mennonite people grew up as a plain person. There are people like Sherry Gore who were looking for meaning to life and stumbled upon the lifestyle. Sherry grew up in California and Florida. When her parents split she chose to live with her father in California. She grew up in an affluent area, yet she was lonely inside. She had been exposed to the love of Jesus through several family members. Because of several bad choices in her life, Sherry was sent from her father's house to her mother's in Florida. Here she lived as a homeless person for six months before eventually getting married, having two children, and moving back to California. Sherry was still looking for something but didn't know what when she and her first husband divorced. After being a single parent raising her daughter's the best she could, she met and married her second husband. Toby loved her and her girls. He gave Sherry the only son she had. This marriage did not last once Sherry found what she was looking for, life lived the way the Bible speaks. A Plain Life. However, her divorce did not mean the end of her relationship to her husband. Sherry leans on her faith as she learns about her oldest daughter's life threatening diseases. I will interject here and say that I live about a mile and a half from Sherry's house. Because I shop in the Pinecraft area I became familiar with her and her cookbooks. I followed along and prayed for her daughter Jacinda until her passing this last spring. Although it is not in the book she remained friends with her ex-husband Toby whom she lost last month. If nothing else this book shows that God can take someone who is so messed up and use them for good. Through her book she shows that God doesn't judge who you are or were as a condition of his acceptance of you. There are many who will say she is not truly Amish or Mennonite. To this I say, unless you live in the area and see and understand that there are many different types of Amish/Mennonite, just like there are many different types of Baptists, you should not judge. Besides, God won't separate us when we get to heaven so why should we worry about it here on earth? this story is her journey to become a "plain" woman, not about what the Amish are all about.

Part memoir, definitely not what I expected. Perhaps growing up around more traditional Amish, it's difficult for me to imagine some of the ones in this book....however she did live in my neck of the woods for a while. I DID enjoy the book, I'm just not sure what I was expecting. Perhaps leaving her husband to become Amish (in a roundabout way) totally confused me. She was looking for "her people" and a "way of life" as opposed, in my opinion, of looking for Jesus. I can't imagine Him telling her to end her marriage either.

Yes this book is a memoir. A tale of a woman searching for her place in the world, "her people" as she shared. But I find myself disagreeing with her choices after her conversion. Finding Christ is so monumental to one's life but it is even greater when you find Him in the midst of circumstances prior to knowing Him. Leaving her husband, Toby, is not something that Our Lord would ever condone. And if she feels it was from Our Lord, then the Bible is wrong since it clearly states we are to stay in our marriage even if our spouse never comes to know Him. I believe Ms Gore wanted acceptance and to be loved. But once again it is not through community that we find that love....no, it is through His Love for us. When she accepted Christ, she became His child. Accepted into the Beloved. Her daughter's illness was a turning point for this family. I understood her decision to move as a way to bring calmness to an otherwise chaotic time in the lives.

I first heard of Sherry Gore on Facebook, as a wonderful cook and author, and as the mom of Jacinda, whose story was offered in Sherry's posts. There was a powerful testimony of God's love, and Sherry's family's love for the Lord, through all I read. So I ordered this book before it was published and looked forward to its' arrival on my doorstep. The least I can possibly say is that Sherry's story and her honesty in telling it blew me out of the water. It is such a contrast to what I expected to read, which I have to say to myself, shame on me. You can rarely read a person's story in their face. You might get hints of the life lived, but you rarely know what the true story is.The most I will say is that THIS BOOK MUST BE READ by anyone who needs to feel an ounce of hope for themselves in their life. Sherry tells the truth, and she tells the TRUTH, and life-giving and life-changing hope is presented here.

Very informative book as it takes us through a troubled past into a journey of self forgiveness and acceptance by others. I agree with other readers that the author didn't need to divorce to become Amish. Forgiveness and acceptance is found in the One who paid it all, not an Amish community. Though I see the allure of the community and her feeling of finally belonging, I feel the author was looking for boundaries and rules, which may be what she needed to live a better life. There is nothing wrong with her self and community imposed rules, but I don't think God expects us all to wear plain clothes and grow our hair long. He is way bigger than that!!its not about rules; it's what HE did for us! I loved this book and read it in one sitting. Very good read.

I first heard about the Longmire series after seeing the TV show. I liked the characters and thought I would read one of the books to get a little more background on the characters. I WAS HOOKED! The books were in depth and told the story far better than the series. Don't get me wrong, the TV series is great and the actors do an outstanding job, but let's face it. It is adapted for TV.If you want to know the REAL characters, relationships, and character history, you have got to read this series!I became hooked and just finished this, the fifth book, and loved it... I will be buying the sixth book very shortly!

This book broke with the usual formatting, jumping back and forth in a relatively short period of time. This didn't bother me in the slightest; I thought it was interesting to see Johnson tackle a different narrative style. Keeps the series interesting. As for the plot itself... I figured out parts of the crime early because I have a health issue that helped me identify clues but I don't think this will affect the majority of readers.Longmire the show is true to Longmire the book-series in the same way that Midsomer Murders is true to Caroline Graham's books: the show captures the essence of the characters but takes liberties with plots, which keeps both formats fresh for viewers. I've also mentioned that each new book in the series makes these deviations more apparent but this book was like a paused stop-watch; the threads that deviate fall by the wayside for this book - not ended, but not important...yet.This book is mostly Walt, with his usual supporting cast of characters elsewhere, off doing other stuff and, to be frank, I missed them. But, since the plot-deviations between book and show involve on-going romantic threads, this book is a great example of why I prefer romances written by men and geared for male audiences. The romance isn't given preference over everything else going on in the story-world. Other stuff -crime- happens. The romance builds slow and steady over a long course of time and, in the end, helps both the characters and the relationships feel more real than the ones displayed in poorly-disguised bodice-rippers touted as westerns. The separation of Walt from the other characters felt like romance building for future books and that is something that will endear me to the series as a whole, when it's completed.

All the Absaroka County folks are back again to help Sheriff Walt Longmire solve the latest crime. Deputy Vic Moretti is feisty as ever wanting to engage Walt in a bit of romantic action. Although he introduces her as an Under-Sheriff — a clever double entendre by Author Johnson? — Walt has scruples about mixing pleasure with business. Henry Standing Bear appears about half way into the book as a boxing contestant but gives Walt plenty of help later. Besides trying to focus on his law-enforcement duties, Walt is worried about his daughter, Cady, who is back in Philadelphia and engaged to Vic’s brother Michael, an officer on the Philly police force. Walt has a woman prisoner in his jail, Mary Barsad, who has confessed to killing her husband, Wade, after he’d set fire to their stable which destroyed six prize horses. Walt doesn’t believe that Mary actually did it and sets out as an undercover insurance agent to find out the truth. Walt’s journey takes him to all kind of places while meeting vastly different types of people. The exciting and tension-filled ending is not one you’d expect as Walt and a “dark horse” emerge from a harsh Wyoming winter evening to solve this complex mystery.

The sixth in the Walt Longmire saga and pushing the rating stars toward a five in my mind. Not quite there yet, but closing in quickly. Walt is once again adding to his catalog of injuries, and still has a seemingly stalled love instinct, but solves crimes at a fast pace in this adventure. Even the junkyard dogs develop character that makes you want to take one home with you. Dog, his companion, serves a larger part in this book, and suffers for it, just like Walt. Dog though is unimpressed by it, and still devours a cheeseburger with enthusiasm. What I missed was the opportunities Walt was presented to open his relationship with Vic, and he failes to follow through. The consummation or destruction of this relationship must be in author Craig Johnson's mind for later. I'm reading the series in order, and have two to go, so I'm sure there is heat somewhere along this line in later books. I totally recommend the series, and equally recommend they be read IN ORDER!

If you don't love the world Craig Johnson has built around Walt Longmire, then you don't have a drop of romance in your soul. This is the west as we wish it was, where right is right, and wrong is wrong; and Walt Longmire is the sensitive, strong, smart, and downright heroic interpreter of this place. Boy howdy. This series is saved from being predictable and trite by two things: Johnson's able prose, and Walt's inner dialogues. I am a 58 yr old female lawyer and if Walt was real, I would propose to him. Dog: check. Horse: check. Kid: check. Women swooning for cowboy/cop: check. Indian sidekick: check. The elements for rolling your eyes are there, ok? But you don't. Because deep down, you want them all to be there; you want the people, places, and things that symbolize a western mystery/romance to really be there. And you want the skill of the writer to be good enough that you aren't even TEMPTED to make fun of it all. Craig Johnson doesn't disappoint. I can't get enough of Walt Longmire and I find myself wanting to live in his world. You will, too.

As usual, an excellent read. Longmire has become my favorite book series, not to mention NetFlix original series. Sad that season six will be the final one, but thanks to Craig Johnson, the books will go on. Thanks C.J.
