Starting with a justification of an exercise he is uncomfortable with ( it flows out of a New York Times series on the top 10 composers) the author writes convincing arguments about his selections and their place. I found the discussion of Schubert's struggles and the related reflections from the authors life to be especially mind expanding. (As one working at understanding the writing of Teilhard de Chardon it makes me yearn for the manifestation of the Omega point.)The arguments in this book also helped understand and place Schoenbergs 12 tone system in the historical development of music. And the book finishes with very sensible arguments about being open to new music without worrying about its place in the canon. And the new understanding this book has given me will help me more thoroughly appreciate the wealth of recordings in the new Bach 333 set.

For several years the distinguished author has been a musical critic for the prestigious New York Times. He also sports a Ph.D in music and has recorded classical music. Out of that rich experience he wrote a series of 2011 articles in his newspaper on the top ten composers of all time! Out of that series this book published in 2018 has been developed and presented to the public. I found it fascinating! Even for me who is not a musician I found the biographical and analytic studies of the various composers to be worth reading about. He begins with Monteverdi who was key in developing Italian opera moving on to such giants of the art as Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Verdi, Wagner, Bartok, Schoenberg, Stravinsky Liszt, Puccini and several others. The book is a joy to read and would be a great gift for a music lover of any age. Music is the international language and this book is a great homage to its power and emotion in the human psyche. Highly recommended!

Since my introduction to classical music listening to my older teenage sister practicing her piano lessons, I've enjoyed classical music, although I have no inclination to learn an instrument or sing. I've listened to classical music while studying, at the NY Philharmonic during a 2-year subscription many years ago, and while reading, eating and doing chores around the house. While I am now familiar with most of the often played repertory of the 18th, 19th and early 20thy century composers , I had little knowledge of the development of that music, until I read Indispensable Composers. Although it has its share of lingo, which is beyond me, Its given me great pleasure. I actually read the book next to my computer and listened to many of the works mentioned in the book on You Tube as I read it. It has enriched my pleasure in listening to music and introduced me to 20th century composers such as Bartok, whose compositions I now enjoy.

This book is an excellent review of the great classical composers. For each of the seventeen composers covered in the book, the author provides a quick biography and a listing of their most important and memorable music (from his perspective and of course his perspective is important). Most of the composers that he selects are, of course, the indispensable composers. But, I'm sure readers will disagree with some selections and wonder why other composers were not selected. But the main ones are here: Bach, Mozart, Handel, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Wagner, Brahms, and Stravinsky. There are others that usually aren't included but it is good that he included them, e.g. Verdi and Puccini. I won't quibble about the missed composers or the ones that he included that resulted in me scratching my head, only to write, that his opinion on why they were included was useful. If you enjoy classical music, like I do, I highly recommend this book.

I followed the author comments in new York Times for some time.He is an educated critic and this book is easy to read.I give the book only 4 stars because I think there is a most appropriateway to suggest to the reader the importance of his selection then "indispensable".

Good read with insightful musical comments. I particularly liked the 2 YouTube links. As a lapsed violinist I missed any discussion of the two towering works, the Beethoven and Brahms Concertos. Also I’ve never warmed to 12 tone music and would have left Schoenberg off my list. Your college years were mine and my musical appreciation was similarly expanded by The Beatles.

Very informative and easy read.

Generic stuff about the obvious composers, more (and more boring) stuff than we need to know about the author. Will knowing that Monteverdi reorganized a library enhance your appreciation of classical music?Better options: "Year of Wonder" (skip the Intro); YouTube master classes; Schiff's Lectures on the Beethoven piano sonatas...

Marketing is a tough field — the marketplace is constantly changing as are the tools that we use to reach customers and prospects. As a senior level marketer I am always interested in knowing what has worked for other marketers. Through interviews with marketing leaders from leading global companies, this book provided very valuable insights that I could use in my job. Great book and a quick read. Highly recommended.

This book provides a practical pathway to align marketing efforts into strategies that address key business and customer issues. It refocuses "marketing buzz phrases/soft metrics" and discusses how marketing can become integral to the key outcomes that drive the business from the C-Suite. If you believe in continuous improvement and management by fact, this book is worth the read.

great book! Very relevant and inspiring contents. I'm inspired and excited to put some of the tips into practice.

Good reading for all the marketers aspiring to make a bigger impact in their organizations and in the business, rather than just be those that only play with agencies and campaigns.

Arrived on time and as described.

A guide to help build business and customer value (for all), this book claims to be the first-of-its-kind for marketers in the 21st century; utilising research to identify 12 specific types of behaviours that can create impact, deliver results and lead to career success and accolade in the process. What a build-up, but can the book deliver? The behavioural types are focussing on the big issues, creating leaders rather than followers, acting as a proactive rather than reactive guide. The authors reportedly have done a lot of groundwork, pulling in research from collaborative partners who looked at over 68,000 executives in 120 different countries, and added to this is real-world advice from some of the world’s top CEOs and CMOs for good measure. There is a lot of material to digest. This is a book you should set aside time to enjoy, just like a fine wine, rather than rush through it during a commute or when you have a few minutes’ downtime here and there. Low on hyperbole and high on quality advice and observation, this was a worthy book on many levels. It shows, for those who don’t believe it, that marketing is an essential evil that can deliver a lot to the company. It should not be viewed as a silo-based activity and neither should its practitioners be side-lined into a narrow vertical area of responsibility. If used correctly, marketing people may even be better-placed to spread their corporate wings and take a much wider, even more responsible position within their company. This may be one of those books that you ignore at your peril! This is not a marketing book per se, it is a leadership book for marketers. It may feel a bit heavy-going but perhaps deservedly so and the information being offered is worth it. It is also something that you may need on your bookshelf and it shouldn’t be kept in “virgin, unread” condition either. Not if you want to progress further, in any case!

Hi I’m Douglas Burdett, host of The Marketing Book Podcast and I’d like to tell you about the book "The 12 Powers of a Marketing Leader: How to Succeed by Building Customer and Company Value" by Thomas Barta and Patrick Barwise.OK, so if you work in marketing or work with someone who works in marketing, it’s probably no surprise that marketing has changed a lot in the last few years. In fact, not too long ago Adobe did a study that found that seventy-six percent of marketers think marketing has changed more in the past two years than the past 50. So what are successful marketers doing these days? That’s what the authors wanted to find out when they fielded the largest ever research study of its kind. The study included over 1,000 surveys of senior marketers, 67,000 surveys of marketers’ bosses, co-workers and direct reports, and over 100 interviews with CMOs and CEOs. What they found is that most marketers are pretty good at doing marketing but not good at leading marketing. And that gap makes all the difference – but it can be bridged. Basically, marketers would better serve their customers, their companies, and themselves by developing their broader business and leadership skills to complement their technical marketing skills. The book then spells out how to do that. Some of the most interesting insights that the book reveals include: Marketers aren’t happy with their limited influence and career success – and their bosses agree, leadership skills matter more than technical marketing skills, and successful marketers align customer needs with company needs.Marketers are masters of fulfilling customer needs, but often fail to understand what matters most to the CEO. The most effective and successful ones help the company maximize what the authors call the “Value Creation Zone” – the crucial overlap between what the customer wants and what the company wants. Marketing leadership skills differ from generic leadership skills. And almost any marketer can become an effective marketing leader. If you want to learn how to better mobilize your boss, your colleagues, your team and yourself and become a much happier, more successful marketer, this is your book. And to listen to an interview with Thomas Barta about "The 12 Powers of a Marketing Leader", visit MarketingBookPodcast.com

This book has tons of great info and I love the way it's presented. It can be read in small chunks or all the way through front to cover. The theories in here are tested and true advice and guidance backed up by facts. For instance there's a specific area I really know I could do better and this book not only points it out but convinces me to work on it by telling me why. I really enjoy books like this that make a real difference and make me better at something or as a person and this book does both for me. It also kept my interest visually and explained things in lots of ways (grouping of the subjects, presenting statistical info, including lots of graphs and illustrations, etc.) so I could really get a grip on the information and put it to immediate use. Lots of books have great info but the delivery on this book is what makes it appeal to my style.

In Answer to Job, Jung examines God’s malevolent side (or, in Jungian terminology, His shadow), with the book of Job as a launching point. This is a sophisticated and quite complex book. I can’t even imagine trying to read it if I hadn’t been actively grappling with some of his concepts already, having just read Modern Man In Search of a Soul. Even so, I struggled to keep up. Be ready to have to google the definition of phrases and words constantly throughout the book.Jung covers such concepts as God’s capacity to do evil, His amorality, His masculinity vs. femininity, and the extent to which God was/is a conscious being. Furthermore, he makes the case that God lost the moral high ground and was thus defeated by Job, leading to the need to essentially re-create Himself as a loving, moral, benevolent human (in Jesus Christ). If any of those concepts interest you, this is the book for you.I hate to reduce Jung’s work into just a few sentences such as I have, but Jung has essentially rendered my mind as mush for the time being.Final say: It’s a very difficult but very worthwhile book. Read it.

I found this book to be insightful , absorbing and enlightening. The book does touch upon the malevolent nature of the deity who pitted himself against Job in one of the most lopsided contests in history. More than that I find that the book examines the dichotomy that exists between the god of the old testament and the god of the new testament. The god of the old testament seems to be unsure of himself , a bully, brutish and unaware of his own nature and the nature of his creation. For an entity that in the old testament was considered to be omnipotent and omniscient the Jehovah in the story of Job seems to be neither. He seems to be easily manipulated by Lucifer and unaware of his own real motives and his own supposed knowledge. The book is not an easy book to read - Jung makes reference to many concepts, ideas and names which are unknown to most readers. I believe that if you are to really understand the book you will have to take notes and do some research as you move from chapter to chapter. I have read a number of books by Jung and this is one of my favorites. I recommend this book to anyone who is a serious student of theology, religion or mythology.

While Jung’s demolishing of the morality of God in causing the suffering of Job can seem unnerving, and his assessment that God seeks to become human might seem to diminish God, he seems quite in line with the orthodoxy of Athanasius, who said that God became man so that man might become divine. A very insightful book.

A fascinating look into the mind of one of the greats, addressing an issue as old as humankind- why do bad things happen to good people? Are dreadful misfortunes the consequence of our actions? Does God protect those who serve him? What are we to think of a God who allows torture of this sort? Jung analyzes God as though he were a patient and produces a powerful portrait that challenges one to think about the meanings of Job.

An insightful look, into where, by definition, can only be a grain of sand in a universal terrain. Yet this grain will prove useful, as I am sure it has already, to most if not all of a person's cotidian needs. Read it, Think on it, Then apply it....

I've wanted to read this for a long time now, and I finally did. It's as heavy and philosophical as you'd expect from Jung, but it's also an incredibly insightful view into the concept of evil in religion. I recommend it.

This is perhaps the greatest book ever written. In this work, Jung is able to show us a meaningful bridge between science and religion, that honors both, and thus makes way for life to continue. Jung's books are like paintings not yet realized of their significance . The conscious level of the reader must expand to grasp these, and one very effective way of doing this is through analysis, which reflects on a persons life experience, and shows the importance of that persons life. In short, meaning!!!

This was a great read, it may take one a couple of reads but there is a lot within this text. Another read may be required for myself
