Unless you are a handyman type already, be sure to buy this book if you want to help your California school kid build that mission that is usually required. I did not have it at the time and am reminded mercilessly of the train wreck of a mission I sent my daughter to school with.

I purchased this book for a neighbor girl who was studying CA Missions and building models of the missions in the 4th Grade. I believe she understands and appreciates the missions much better now.

Great for teaching the 4th grade.

This book was very helpful in building my 4th grade son's mission project. It showed very good hints and tips on how to do certain details of each mission. I have two younger kids that I will surely use when it's their turn.

Great buy!

Just what we needed. Thanks.

There were great ideas on how to build your mission and some information for a report. Too bad there is no information about inside the mission.

I found this book (the 2008 edition) in the gift shop at Mission Carmel (aka Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo, for all you other 4th grade parents out there :-) What a great find. It gives detailed yet simple instructions for building mission models, and accessories such as ovens and bell walls, using cardboard, popsicle sticks, sugar cubes, clay, foam core, egg cartons, pasta, etc. Many different options are described. There are recipes for making your own modeling dough and sand clay. Includes illustrations of what a real adobe mission wall looks like, in case you want to try to replicate it, and of how to layer lasagna noodles to make a Spanish tile roof. Did you know you can tear off the paper on one side of corrugated cardboard, and the corrugations underneath can also make a great tile roof? I learned that here. There are scaled layouts of all 21 missions and lots of encouragement for trying different things. The sample projects look like 4th grade missions, not dollhouses, and the emphasis is practical. Though I'm a semi-crafty person this book absolutely helped us get started, and to do things the easy way! (Though to make it complicated my daughter decided it would be great to do her mission as it looked originally, with a thatch roof and a stockade, so we couldn't use the modern layout, but had to look at the archeological records and old paintings... fun though.) The book also has brief but interesting info and illustrations on mission history and how and why things were built the way they were. Highly recommended.

To have the Classics so close at hand we moderns must thank AMAZON and others. This Edition of the Aeneid takes us back to the time of John Dryden, the great English writer. He gives us a very polished translation of the Latin. Impossible to give us all the beauties and subtleties of the Latin yet it is a wonderful introduction to Virgil. An impelling story about the "Pius Aeneus"- a basic story to out European Culture. The founding of Rome!! The Introduction to this Edition is a real gem. Read it- again and again if necessary. It is an education in itself. My first reading of the AENEID was many years ago but I still feel its influence. It is time for the modern world to again learn the wisdom, the ideals, the morals handed down from the Masters. A final appeal: for heavens sake don't pass through life without having read this Classic. It would be a disaster, Monet and Price no excuse- the KINDLE price is a give-away. Happy reading. Ignotus.

I happen to love both the Iliad and the Odyssey. The Aeneid tries to be both but ultimately fails. If you have read the Iliad then you know Troy falls. But you never see what happens to get that damned Argive horse into Troy do you? The Aeneid shows you. Book Two of the Aeneid is probably the highlight of the book. And you also see the fate of Aeneas, son of Venus and destined to star in Virgil's national epic about the founding of Rome.Essentially Juno holds a grudge. Paris didn't choose her so she hates Troy. Then Zeus has the audacity to replace her daughter Hebe with Ganymede as cupbearer to the Gods. And Zeus is probably having a relationship with Ganymede right underneath Juno's nose. Juno is not thrilled and so she turns what should be a nice straight forward voyage from Asia Minor to central Italy into an epic involving foreign queens (poor Dido) and lots of war. Seriously there is a lot of war in the last six books. The war action is probably why I gave this three stars instead of four. By trying to recapture the majesty of Iliad, Virgil fails. The last half of the Aeneid is a serious bore.As an aside, I didn't realize that Laocoön and his fate featured in the Aeneid. Who are they? You'll find out but also google Vatican City Laocoön sculpture. Some seriously beautiful art.Should you read this? Yes, I suppose so. Along with the Iliad and the Odyssey, the Aeneid is one of the foundational texts of Western Civilization for good reason. These are stories that are told and retold over the centuries and appear in lots of art as well. Plus, it's relatively short too. But by trying to fit in the future into a story about the past, Virgil loses his way. And so we are left with this - If Juno/Hera is one of the three Goddesses who offers you a gift, always choose her. Or else.

I had read some years ago Professor Fagles' translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey and loved them both. Fortunately, before his recent death, Fagles also translated Virgil's Aeneid. I wasn't very familiar with the Aeneid, but this translation brings it alive. I don't know enough Latin to be an independent judge of the translation, but experts attest that this is a great translation into modern English. For those not familiar with the poem, the Aeneid is the flip side of the Iliad and the Odyssey. It's the story of Aeneas, a Trojan and minor figure in the Iliad, who escapes Troy after the Greeks overrun it and has a series of travels and adventures, ending up in Italy and founding Rome. The Greeks, such as Odysseus, are among the villains. Beautiful language and a stirring story. Most recommended.

Many other reviewers have pointed out that this edition of The Aeneid has major formatting issues on the Kindle. I really wanted to read the Robert Fagles translation, as I had enjoyed his versions of The Iliad and The Odyssey. I decided that I could probably deal with some spacing issues if it meant I could read the Fagles translation.I was pleasantly surprised once I purchased the eBook. There are NO formatting issues of any kind on my Kindle Paperwhite. I'm not sure if this was because of an update to the document itself, or just because of the specific Kindle I was using.Fagles, again, does a great job making the epic poetry readable. But The Aeneid ultimately gets four stars because it's a somewhat contrived, convoluted story, especially in comparison to Homer's epics. It's definitely not bad, though. The Aeneid is a sequel to Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, written around 700 years after them. Written by Virgil, a Roman poet, The Aeneid is the missing link in our pop-culture portrayal and understanding of the Trojan War. This is the volume that describes the Trojan Horse episode, the fall of Troy, and the Trojan invasion of Italy. The epic follows Trojan warrior Aeneas as he journeys from Troy and invades Italy.By linking Rome with Troy, Virgil gave the Roman people a sense of entitlement in conquest and revenge against Carthage and Greece. But since Rome and Troy are not linked together in historical reality, Virgil manufactures a bunch of cop-out reasons for why the Italians maintained their own culture even after being conquered by the Trojans. This entire epic reminded me of an unnecessary Hollywood sequel, made purely as a cash-in. That being said, there are many really interesting and entertaining moments in this epic, and I enjoyed it overall.

I loved Ms. Ibrahim's first novel,Yellow Crocus, but this book lacked the literary brilliance of that book. I'd still recommend it as it completed the first book and potentially sets us up for yet another sequence. What I loved about the first book was her skillful portrayal of the characters, this book was not as good about developing characters. The ability to portray the life and injustices of the former slaves is something that did not go unnoticed and it is sure to stir up strong feelings in the reader. For this alone, I still highly recommend the book with the caveat that the reader reads Yellow Crocus first.

I AM THERE. It’s difficult for me to describe my feelings right now, what is possessing my mind as I begin this novel. The characters, good or not-so-good, have in a few moments become intimate friends. And I am THERE, in 1868 America, experiencing the inner lives of former slaves, their children and families, and the inner lives of honest and caring people with no slavery background but life-forming connections.ALTERNATING FIRST PERSON, THIRD PERSON narration blends into an easy flow, keeping me present with the characters. I've rarely felt so much a part of folks like these and cheering for them, even praying for them. I know that sounds weird since they're fictitious; and if not fictional, they're no longer living. But yes, they are living in today's world and folks.CARING ABOUT THE CHARACTERS. Jordan Freedman, 19 years old, is a teacher in a racially diverse one-room elementary school. Her family'a heritage is being slaves. You got to love her and sympathize with her devotion to her students: “God, help me to be a worthy guide for these hearts, souls, and minds. Amen.”Lisbeth, 30-years-old, was born into the privileged class in the antebellum South fo slave-owners. Her beloved nurse from babyhood is Mattie, Jordan’s mother. All these women develop a bond deeper than just being friends. But that bond is tested when Lisbeth returns to her former home, a plantation in Virginia. There she faces smothering animosity from her Confederate family who feel she betrayed them by marrying an abolitionist.TENSE AND TENDER PLOT. So too Jordan and her mother Mattie return to their former home. They want to save their family who still are being oppressed by their former owners and other whites. Will young Jordan and Mattie be able to bring some liberation for their beloved family? This is both a tense and tender novel as both families seek to come to terms with the past and free themselves from lingering hatred and present fractures. The author writes from her in-depth research plus her own background as founder and director of Woolsey Children’s School. Both her heart and experience enrich this amazing story she shares. I’m sure this book's people will invade my emotions for many years to come, as it likely will yours. I look forward to reading more books by this very human and skilled author.

Mustard Seed is an emotional, captivating story of faith and family, and how those two things can help us through the darkest of times. The book takes place three years after the end of the Civil War, and it is a stirring account of what conditions were like for former slaves and their owners at that time. Three strong, brave, loving women are at the center of this story; women who left the South before the war began, women who believe that conditions have improved in Virginia, especially for the former slaves; but when they return they find that the same battles are being fought, that injustice and oppression are still being inflicted. These women and their families captured my heart, evoking emotions on every page. The story was so compelling, I read each page with my heart in my throat, and I stayed up very late last night reading til the end! This book continues the story of the author's previous book, Yellow Crocus, and I highly encourage you to read that book first.

I received this book through a Goodread's drawing. I will give it 4 stars, because the history of the post-war south needs to be told, but I would recommend this book to teens, or young adults, as it is a story that has been told multiple times, and ways, to those of us that are the older generation. The story itself is well written, and the characters are appealing.

I was anxious to read the Mustard Seed because the author Laila Ibrahim had written the Yellow Crocus, one of BEST novels that I had ever read. I still highly recommend it to individuals. This particular novel was not her best.Though she had a list of characters listed in the front of the book, in my opinion there were too many and about a third were insignificant. While reading, I often had to refer to her character list. Having to do this, often lost my train of thought and I had to go back and read the page before. The story itself was interesting and informative considering the novel was placed 3 years post Civil War. I was very surprised that "slavery" was still living and thriving in the south.Ibrahim had a great story to tell but could have done it with less characters.

This is a gripping story of life in the troubled South after the Civil War. It really portrays so many conflicts within families, slaves who are still on plantations fearful of their masters, yet not sure there is a free future elsewhere. Families have lost their homes, their livelihood as plantation owners as been reduced. Many families have experienced the loss of loved ones fighting in the war, and some families fought against one another depending whether choosing to fight for the North or for the South. Though "free", there are still problems with voting, with the law, and equality for all. Jordan, a former slave, is now a teacher and wants to become a suffragette, yet the plight of the South pulls her back.Though we are "familiar" with the Civil War, this personalizes the experience as a slave family returns South to search for loved ones separated by being sold to different plantations. Another family returns home, as Lisbeth's father is dying. She chose to leave plantation life, married to an abolitionist , now living in Ohio. Her children are being raised with an openness about the world needing kindness, education, freedom.

This book on Galatians is typical John Stott - He is to the point - yet in devotional method - discussing the problem existing and Paul's answer to the problems - Easy reading and understanding - After reading this book you will understand the book of Galatians better when you read it again.

When I start a study on a particular book of the bible, after a general reading of the text, I go through the introductions to whatever commentaries I may be using. For me, this is important. I like to have a thorough feel for the who, what, when, where, and why of the text at hand. When I started Galatians, I was surprised to find that this volume has no introduction apart from the 6 page 'review' at the end of the book. For that reason, I can't recommend this book as your only commentary on Galatians. That being said, it's still classic John Stott. He has a unique, often catchy, way of bringing the text to life that is eminently useful for sermon and lesson preparation. If you've used and enjoyed his other work, you're likely to also enjoy this one. I would recommend using this as a supplement to a more thoroughly exegetical commentary with a proper introduction.

While Stott claims that the Bible Speaks Today series (of which this work on Galatians-Thessalonians is a part) is not a set of commentaries but something less ambitious, "studies," I keep the books that he writes in the series close by as I teach an adult Sunday School class. Stott is a model of clarity, has insight borne of many years of study and ministry, and gives you what you need quickly. He also gives you his sources, mainly through his footnotes, providing a bibliography for the amateur bible student, as I am. For example, in Galatians, Stott makes great use of Luther's commentary - a source that is available from Amazon for download on Kindle without charge.

I think that this commentary is very much like other Stott commentaries that I have used (Ephesians & Romans). He gives great phrases for teaching and preaching. For example in chapter 1:1 he goes into detail about what an apostle was from a Jewish perspective. Then he gives a mini excursus on NT apostleship...and teaches that there can be no more apostles in any sense. He does not offer convincing evidence for his position. The problem with all of this is that none of it comes from the Galatians text he is discussing. There isn't anything in Galatians 1:1 that would tell us in any way that apostles are not for today. That sort of conclusion is not exegetical and is debated hotly in various circles. So you must watch out for Stott to give one side of a debated issue without clueing you in on the other views. So why do I rate this a four star? Why do so many people like Stott's stuff?I think that it's really good to use Stott's material for innovative and catchy phrases that summarize the terminology well. He often has an innovative outline of whatever he is teaching on. Galatians is no exception to that rule. Another thing that is great about this commentary is that it follows his matching bible study guides. So a Bible Study Leader can use Stott to start discussions, and if he has read this book, he has more meat to add to the discussions. To round out Stott, I heartily recommend the following additions.Since FF Bruce has a commentary on Galatians, I recommend his. Also Fung's NICNT on Galatians is very careful to thoroughly explore the most reasonable options and show why one is superior over the others. Both of them are really good. One more point...Stott sometimes interacts with popular pressures from different camps. For example in Galatians 1:1-2 he interacts with the radical camp and then turns to interact with the catholic theologians. For the radicals he says that Paul's apostolic authority is divine and higher than the contemporary authority they claim is equal to Paul. For the catholics, he says that apostolic succession is not a biblical concept. In these interactions he is very convincing. He provides answers for people who may be hearing things from these two popular groups that are contrary to Paul's teaching in Galatians. So for his interactions, fresh phraseology and innovative outlines, I recommend Stott heartily. Just check his exegesis...he should not be the solo commentary for a study on Galatians. If you can only get one, I recommend Fung's or Bruce's. Having said that, I will keep using Stott whenever I study Galatians. He is excellent overall. I'm grateful to have this commentary in my office.

Unfortunately I am not very good at reading the Bible on my own. On the other hand, I find many devotionals too superficial and don't like the fact that they skip around. On the other hand, I want to take seriously the challenge to study the scriptures dilligently. I have recently started reading commentaries like this and the expositional commentaries by R.C. Sproul as daily devotionals. This has worked well for me because they cover entire books of the Bible, so that things are not taken out of context. They also do things like provide historical background and word studies that help in really understanding the text. I found this one very readable and challenging.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. I regularly teach a course on the book of Galatians and John Stott's commentary is invaluable to me. I highly recommend for anyone who wants to understand how much Jesus has already done what we all strive to do for ourselves in our own merit and performance. This writing helps me and reminds me that what Jesus did was and still is ENOUGH and I am free to live in the truth of His righteousness.

The book met my expectations with a full and comprehensive revelation of the work of Paul during this particular season of his evangelistic journey. The book really exposed the "watershed" moment of the Christian faith being an experience of faith or works. John Stott's writing revealed the narrow lane by which "grace" through the power of the "Holy Spirit" working through Paul, made the difference. The writing was well written in a systematic easy to follow order. John Stott elaborated on his talking points very well giving the reader a clear and full understanding at the books completion.I recommend the book with an "A" rating.

love John Stott easy to read and full of information

My Review: The Edge of Lost is the kind of book that plunges you into its world and was so engaging that I read it in two sittings. It has two storylines, one being much more dominant, that finally converge towards the end of the book. The book starts in 1937 with a frantic search for a little girl who has gone missing on Alcatraz island. Then the book shifts back a couple of decades to Ireland and the main story which focuses on the tumultuous life of a young Irish boy, Shan Keagan who makes his way to America with the hopes to lives his dreams as an entertainer.Through Shan's eyes the reader gets a clear view of the immigrant experience as he moves to New York City. He's an easy character to like and you can't help but root for him and the cast of secondary characters and the descriptions of New York City are vividly depicted. While the reader gets engrossed in Shan's life the question of what happened to the missing child on Alcatraz still lingers.I'd classify this book as a lighter historical fiction read. Sure, it deals with some heavy situations (immigration, prohibition, prison, loss ...) and had some great writing but it still kept that lighter tone. The only thing that lowered my rating of this book is that while I adored Shan's story, the storyline that focuses on the missing girl (the last third of the book) fell a little flat to me. I guess I was expecting something grittier since it was set on Alcatraz island and more substantial since the missing girl is the focus of the book description. Also, towards the end of the book some of the twists felt far fetched and things wrapped up a little too nicely. But in the end this was still a very enjoyable read and I liked how the two storylines were brought together towards the end of the book. This is a coming of age story about about family - in all its forms, the immigrant experience and taking advantage of second and third chances. Book clubs should check out the Q and A with the author at the back of the book for some great book club discussions. My Rating: 4 starsDisclaimer: My sincere thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary e-book copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.**This book review can also be found on my blog, The Baking Bookworm (www.thebakingbookworm.blogspot.ca) where I share hundreds of book reviews and my favourite recipes. **

This is the kind of book that "grows" on you. You might buy it because of the reviews. You might buy it because of the description summary that sounds so mysterious and incredible. But when you read it, you find out it's a well written story about an orphan that you want to feel sorry for but don't because he doesn't feel sorry for himself. He just picks up and keeps going. He's grateful and good to the people who help him and that's what makes the difference as the story unfolds. It has several mysteries to resolve. What happened to his father? What happened to the brother? and as the review summary implied what's with the little girl on Alcatraz? This is a slow but wonderful read. I never got bored with it but it did not race to the end. (That is for those of you who want a lot of action and a fast read). It's just a story about a boys/mans life that has many interesting turns, some good, some bad, all of them woven with human decisions.

As a reader, finding a new remarkable storyteller is a joy. “The Edge of Lost” is the second novel written by Kristina McMorris that I’ve read and I’m pleased she happened along. Her work is compelling and moving, and her research into background material is remarkable. Research is essential if I’m to enjoy historical fiction.Shanley Keagan is a product of early 1900 Ireland. Life is not easy and early tragedies send him to the United States where, as a precocious 12-year old he begins making pennies in the dives and pubs of New York City. He works as a comedian and vaudevillian performer, getting quiet snickers and some limited notoriety. An Italian family takes him in to replace a son that died and he becomes a family member with the parents, their daughter, and son. He soon becomes Tommy Capello, being informally given a deceased boy’s name by the family.A crime leader who appreciates his work in the club also informally adopts him. The bad guy also employs his pseudo brother, who rises to be a high-powered capo.Family turmoil and unfortunate association with underworld figures eventually land Tommy on the Rock of Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco Bay. He has settled in for his long sentence when he discovers an escape has been planned for him and, because he has befriended the young daughter of a brutal prison guard he decides to attempt it, taking her along. That’s it for disclosing the storyline.McMorris does a masterful job of studying family relationships, the disturbing association of criminals, the culture of prison environment, and behavior of the upstanding when caught up in unsavory situations. The characters in her novel are realistic, complex, and driven by human behavior to which we can all relate. The pacing and continuity of her story never becomes too complex to weaken the reality. One must continue to read, ignoring other more pressing issues such as eating and sleeping.I strongly recommend that you pick up her books, settle in for an entertaining read, and return to your normal living pattern when the reading is completed. You’ll have much to contemplate.Schuyler T WallaceAuthor of TIN LIZARD TALES
