From the Back Cover

Freedman shares his best baseball stories from a state whose season is short but there's no shortage of future major leaguers passing through-some 300 in the past thirty summers. Read about: The annual Midnight Sun Game that starts without lights at 10:30pm. An Alaska League team so eager to get in a game on a soggy day that is sets the playing field on fire. The legendary radio announcer who exits mid-game, inviting a bystander to continue the play by play. The bullpen that sneaks off to a local tavern for a few beers - during the game! But, hey! This is no joke. Mark McGwire, Dave Kingman, and Dave Winfield (all pitching then) donned uniforms of teams such as the Fairbanks Goldpanners, Alaska Glacier Pilots, Peninsula Oilers, Valley Green Giants, Mat-Su Miners, North Pole Nicks, and Anchorage Bucs. Other Alaska League alumni: Hall-of-Fame pitcher Tom Seaver and fireball hurler Randy Johnson. And don't overlook H.A. "Red" Boucher, "the George Washington of Alaska baseball," and others who shaped baseball history in the north.

Before the Cape Cod League came to fame, the place for college baseball players to hone their skills in the summer was the Alaska Baseball League. Over 300 Major League Baseball players spent a season or more in the ABL, including guys like Tom Seaver, Dave Winfield and Mark McGwire. The ABL was the place to play, and the teams and the games were terrific.Lew Freedman's book captures part of that glory, from the start of the Fairbanks Goldpanners under Red Boucher in 1960 through the 2000 season. The ups, downs, stars, feuds, heroes and villains; Freedman does a good job and brings an informed perspective to a great story. The ABL was more or less "discovered" on the 100th anniversary of the Midnight Sun Game back in 2006, when Sports Illustrated, ESPN and others came up to cover the game. The great story wasn't 100 years of games played from 10:30 PM to 1:00 AM without artificial lights; the big story was the amazing success across the decades of the ABL. But Freedman was there first.Barry Bonds, Randy Johnson, three generations of Boones, Jason Giambi, John Olerud, Rich Aurilia; the list of former ABL players is long and distinguished. Kudos to Lew Freedman and Epicenter Press for telling the story well.

Lew Freedman wrote one of the better books in baseball history as he traces the history of Alaskan baseball (bush league in its finest form) from the territorial days to the turn of the century. What make this book so interesting is that it also spotlights on many of the players who used to played in Alaska during its short summer seasons who later on became big time Major League players like Mark McGwire, Dave Kingman and Randy Johnson. But overall, the main focus of the book remains on baseball in Alaska, the history of the teams, players and coaches along with some of it more eccentric fans. It may be that some of the players we see in Anchorage today during the summer season, may be a future Hall of Famer. The book comes highly recommended for anyone interested in baseball history or enjoyed baseball in general.

Lots of pictures and stories

This is a very good book about different teams in the Alaska Baseball League. In talks about each team and their players and also talks of the history of the league.

Praise for Under the Feet of Jesus  “Brilliantly executed...intense...exhibits a command of the potential magic inherent in the written word that most writers can only aspire to...a remarkable voice.”—Sunday Oregonian   “Captivating...vivid.”—Orlando Sentinel   “Lyrical...a compelling debut...Viramontes displays gifts of understanding and storytelling unusual for a first novel.”—Kirkus Reviews   “A beautiful story...Her writing is tactile and sonorous, but there is something more...I wanted to meet Viramontes’ characters, squat down, and eat with them.”—Alfredo Vea, Jr., author of La Maravilla   “Tempers a restrained fury at social injustice with lovely lyrical grace...Viramontes has a keen eye for finding beauty.”—Elle   “Gives a fierce poetic voice to the lives of Piscadores in the California vineyards and orchards...Viramontes writes with an irresistible authority that compels our recognition and wonder.”—Judith Grossman, author of Her Own Terms   “A literary feat and a powerful political statement.”—Seattle Times & Post-Intelligencer   “A lyrical tale… Viramontes’ images linger, and the book will linger for a while, too.”—Washington Post Book World"A moving, heartbreaking tale of loss and survival."—Julia Alvarez, author of How The García Girls Lost Their Accents and In the Time of the Butterflies“Stunning...blends lyricism, harsh realism and concern for social justice.”—Newsweek“The best literary fiction makes its villains out of situations rather than people, and finds its heroes not in noble victors but in the spirit of ordinary men and women. In this lyrical tale of a fruit-picking family in some nameless weedy place, there is no sadistic overseer, unless it is the pitiless sun, which sucks sweat and hope from laboring bodies. Viramontes's novel comes the closest of any yet to universalizing this appalling life.”—Joanne Omang, The Washington Post“An exciting read...Throughout this rich novel, Viramontes brings us into her world and we fall under her spell.”—Los Angeles Times Book Review   “A remarkable tale...a wealth of robust colors and magic...Readers will take to the lushness of Under the Feet of Jesus like a thirsty traveler to a well.”—Thomas Keneally, author of Schindler’s List

I got this book because it was a requirement for a college course. It is a fantastic story about the struggles of a Hispanic family that comes to the US for a better life but are forced to adapt to new living. It gives you some perspective on how different cultures are and how differently people are treated. Great read!

I read this novel for my Graduate Seminar in American Literature course, and I couldn't put it down! The writing is beautifully original, and Viramontes evokes deep emotion for her characters and left me wanting more of their stories. The authenticity of this story makes it important for more than just the enjoyment of a good book--it took me inside a world I would otherwise have never been privy to. My heart is bigger,my gratitude is deeper, and my compassion is stronger for having spent time in this book.

Purchased for my English class. Offers an interesting eco-critical reading about the treatment of land and agricultural workers.

Nice retro short novella about a migrant worker family, despite being required reading at school.Extra words. Extra words extra word

My book got here fast and in great condition! The book it self... not my favorite but the Quality was great!

I enjoyed this book because of the dynamics between the three or four main characters who show you the life of extreme poverty and desperation that is part of their everyday lives. This book is beautifully written with vivid descriptions and characters that I could grasp. While it's short, it tells an emotional story of a Mexican family who makes their modest living by picking fruit under the scorching sun. It is a tale for everyone, especially people in this country, to read and discover how other people are living their lives simply off the produce of the ground. Read this is you want to be culturally aware.

Good quality book for university English course. Arrive on time and as described

Salt. Who would have thought something so simple, so seemingly common (to Americans) could control the world? Can it? Does it? Mark Kurlansky and S.D. Schindler reveal the significant and necessary role of salt in man's history in The Story of Salt, a condensed version of Salt: A World History, Kurlansky's best-seller for adults.Speaking of canning, the duo show the discovery of canning with airtight, heated jars (p. 38). Just as with the discovery of salt as a preservative, then the next step in salt's progress was canning and frozen foods. But back to the beginning. That is what the book does: It shows textually and pictorially how seeking sources of salt became essential to the growth of civilizations. As wanderers, men could eat the flesh of animals and get a necessary amount of salt. However, once people formed settlements, they had to go out to find salt sources. In nearly all cases, by-products were discovered: natural gas, secondary foods (cheese, sauerkraut, bacon), international trade, soy sauce, mummies, transporting without spoilage, salt fish, exploration, trade organizations, meatpacking, roads, new industries, independence, and oil drilling. This is a significant list. Each item is featured, illustrated, explained in a delightful manner from one block to a two-page spread of artwork and text. For example, in Hallein, a Celtic settlement whose name means "saltwork," Celts used salt to preserve the thigh of hog to create ham. A block on the next page (23) shows a preserved Celt (known by their colorful clothing), who had been trapped in a collapsed salt mine around 400 B.C.Other examples are the trade organizations formed by seacoast countries with cod fishing and inland countries with salt mines, e.g. the English and the Portuguese, the Germans and Italians. Prior to the War for Independence, the colonists traded their Virginia hams for Liverpool's salt. The war forced colonists to find their own salt source, which they did to became independent in more ways than one.A highly informative text loaded with illustrations, this book could well serve teachers and librarians in web research projects: salt in the middle with all the peripheral products and events spoking outward, with each one assigned to a team or group to research further, then create a powerpoint or other software presentation. Think of the multiple intelligences generated, much as salt generates other things. And certainly not common!A highly fascinating and recommended book!

This is basically a nicely illustrated book designed for the young student interested in chemistry, geography, geology, and history - and to make it even better, as an adult I learned quite a few things that I didn't know about salt. For the more advanced group, I would like to say that salts are precipitates of the joining of a acid and base. e.g. when one part HCL [hydrochloric acid] is added to one part NAOH [sodium hydroxide] - think drain cleaner in this case; we are left with one part table salt NACL and one part water H2O [which can also be written as HOH.The authors begin with an explanation of how most of the surface salt on the earth is formed by solar evaporation of sea water. I found it interesting to learn that rock salt is still mined underground near the cities of Detroit and Cleveland, which now explains why some northern states use salt to thaw the ice and snow on roads in the winter - its relatively cheap. The USA produces the most salt of any country in the world with the largest mines near Salt Lake City. One fact that I found interesting was why modern roads seem to meander so much rather than go in straight lines. Well, it seems they simply followed old animal paths that the animals had followed in their quest of looking for the next salt lick, as all mammals require salt for survival. We learn how salt was used to preserve many types of food and eventually lead to some of our favorite foods of today as bacon, ham, and even ketchup, with the Egyptians being the first to use preservation on a large scale. The importance of salt throughout the ages was clarified in many places as in our own history when we declared our independence from England, and our own large scale salt industry sprang up, after England cut off our salt supply. It is hard to believe that the authors could get so many interesting facts told in such an absorbing way in a 48pp book with numerous illustrations and a great two page timeline of important events in the history of salt placed at the end. This not only makes a nice reference for late grade and middle school kids, but a fun book that parents will enjoy reading themselves. Highly recommended.

We loved this book! My students had to make a Prezi on a non-fiction book. I teach a special education class. We ended up dividing the book into sections and each pair of students made a Prezi on their section. It is packed with great illustrations and tons of information. Loved it and the students were totally engaged into the story of something so seemingly mundane.

This is a wonderful story for middle schoolers and high schoolers who have difficulty reading. The text is based on phonics rules with the addition of geographical names of places and people who were involved with the production and trade of salt throughout history. The artist's drawings are technical, but simple. I planned to use it for tutoring, but didn't get to due to circumstances beyond my control.

I started using this book as part of a unit designed by Writing Fundamentals for the Feature Article writing unit. This book models how a Feature Article presents an everyday topic in an interesting way. Every year my students love this book and enjoy learning the history of salt and all of the weird things people used to do with it. It is nonfiction and has many colorful illustrations and diagrams.

This is a great book, especially for a social studies teacher. I teach about European exploration and we talk about the use of salt often. I thought this book would be interesting!

Very interesting history!

I was hoping for a book for an 11 year old, (I read the full version and loved it), Luckily I have an 8 year old who might like it (though I wish I bought it last year)
