If you are looking for a detailed map of London---this was disappointing. It doesn't show all of London --it does have a nice tube map on it--but that covers part of the city. We were able to place most of the places we wanted to visit but it wasn't quite what we wanted. We will have to get something better later on to help us with walking the city & negotiating streets. Also appears to be somewhat off on distances compared to when we put in addresses on google maps & their key of distances.

very clear map of central London, big enough to provide significant detail, but not so large it becomes difficult. The major attractions are already marked and I'm marking everything else I want to see. This will make it much more time-efficient to route my day and not accidentally bypass anything and have to back track!

I was very pleased with this map of London. it was easy to carry, easy to open and easy to read. But I was disappointed in it because the flat where I ws staying was on the South Bank and the map didn't show the area I was in at all. Yet on the north side of the Thames, the map ranged well out of London into the suburbs.

As usual Nat Geo maps are rugged and dependable... I like the plastic material. BUT; often I wanted to go just a little farther than the map covered. So I used the free touristmaps instead. I wish the map covered just a few more blocks in each direction.

Love these maps. They have a silicone coating that is durable and won't get ruined if it gets wet.

This map didn't cover as much area as I had hoped, and I honestly didn't use it a lot. The way to find things in London is through Google.

Looked at several other London maps but this one, for me, was the clearest and least cluttered yet detailed.

This is kind of a mixed bag. It's seems more like a peek into Marx's private notebook than a fully formed treatiste per se, he's just starting here to pin down things like capital, labor, money, and the individual, and to give some basic analysis with regards to how they interact. But by the end, I was surprised at just how humanistic it turned out to be. This isn't the often cold, polemical materialism that he would develop later on, but something which is deep down concerned with the problems that capital et al. has for basic human dignity and value. Maybe I'm telgraphing too much of Heidegger into it, but it seems that what this gets at is the ways in which capitalism alienates us not just in our day to day lives, but on a more metaphysical level, from our sense of Being itself. It's a very sensitive, musing piece of writing which, for it being Marx, I found refreshing

Social theorists, Marxists among them, often make a sharp distinction between Marx's early work, especially the Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts, and everything that came after The German Ideology. In this view, the early Marx was a social philosopher who had not yet promulgated a method or constructed a coherent conceptual framework, while his later work, especially the first volume of Capital, escaped the soft amorphousness of social philosophy and gave us rigorous social and economic science through application of historical materialism. There may be merit to this distinction, but I think that, at best, it is vastly overdrawn.Either explicitly or by unmistakable implication, the Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts give us nearly all the basic and most compelling ideas that provide the foundation for Marx's later work. The objectively determined antagonism between capital and labor is explained with clarity and force. The fact that capital and labor constitute classes in a macro-level sense, rather than through reference to characteristics of individuals or status groups seems undeniable. The structural determination of behavior takes the focus off ostensibly rapacious capitalists and laboring class victims, making notions like "good guys," "bad guys," and even free will seem obsolete and beside the point. Determinism is the watchword.Perhaps the most insightful and interesting observation in the Manuscripts is Marx's conclusion that the more workers produce the stronger the hand of capital. The more productive the worker the more he undercuts his position with respect to capital. Technological innovations, for example, make workers more productive, but they also reduce the demand for labor and reduce labor costs.When Marx wrote the Economic and Philosophical manuscripts he had not yet made the distinction between labor and labor power, and the commoditization of labor was less clear. Furthermore, he had not yet augmented use value and exchange value with his own notion of value, measurable units which could be objectively quantified in terms of labor power. The distinction between labor and labor power, however, seems obvious even if unstated in the Manuscripts, and Marx's elaborated account of value has always seemed to generate confusion, raising all sorts of measurement problems which seem unlikely to be solved. Thorstein Veblen, generally sympathetic toward Marx's work, dismissed the labor theory of value as unduly metaphysical; probably as good a characterization as any.To his credit, toward the end of the Manuscripts, Marx engages in an hypothetical discussion of something he calls "primitive communism." This is a world fraught with envy and resentment, the product of a premature effort to produce a genuinely communist society. This illustration was used to emphasize Marx's admission that he did not know what form a genuinely communist or socialist society would take. Instead, this was something that would have to emerge historically.At the risk of gross over-simplification, I'll offer a Marxist explanation of the economic mess we share today: too many laboring people make too little money and are forced to rely on credit offered by the capitalist class. When borrowers are completely tapped out, unable to pay what they've borrowed, the system collapses. Fundamentally, this is not because loans were unduly risky, but because most people had so little that risky loans were essential to maintaining the bare rudiments of a lower-middle class life style.

Great trip suggestions and tips. Used this to plan a 3 day trip to Downeast Maine. Departed from Jonesport to see some of the islands and camp out. It steered me away from some potentially dangerous itineraries and gave great advice for the area. Highly recommend!

We just returned from a trip to Maine - we used the book to plan our excursions - It still required usage of an atlas and GPS for some areas but it is a useful book - We plan to use it again and will update!

This would have had 5 stars as this manual is absolutely what I was looking for with tons of great information BUT . . . . . . there is a problem with this book as printed. The book I got, (U.S. Army Survival Manual, Dep of the Army, Revised and updated by Colonel Peter T Underwood USMC (Ret) (cameo cover - just like the photo shown) (copyright 2011) ---Here's the issues1. The CONTENTS PAGE only shows Chapters 1 - 5. There is NO contents page for Chapters 6 - 19 and this is not a torn out page -- it is a printing error because the BACKSIDE of the 1 page contents page IS printed with the List of Appendix A - H.BUT . . there is so MUCH great information in this book and it is like new at a used price that I decided not to return it.Instead, I found an older 2001 edition online and I was able to copy/paste that into a word doc, input page #'s, and print that out in the 6"w x 9"H format of this book.Also the 2001 Edition contains other chapters this one doesn't. So I just printed them out online. Unfortunately that is another 59 pages of printing but it can be cut down to this book format size as that is how I printed it.Really, this is a book every survivalist should have but might also come in VERY handy for the camper or hiker in a jam.Wish it had been complete -- but I'll take it as it is. Just modified it. And learned a lot doing that.

Great survival guide packed with lots of great info. Perfect for beginner survivalists, or even more experienced people also. Covers different scenarios... lost at sea, desert survival, arctic survival, & etc. Also has a section covering poisonous snakes, insects, plants & etc with good color pics. Great addition to your bug out bag or atleast the knowledge it has to offer.

Good info in it. Bought the book in case we're ever faced with a situation where there's no power for a device. Was afraid it would be dated, but it covers the basics, which is most important in a survival situation.

I really like the full color pictures of the edible and poisonous plants, as well as the advice to NEVER EAT MUSHROOMS. However, I would like to point out that there is something missing that was in the original document (of which I have only a digital copy, a pity). There is a section at the end of the original that describes survival conditions in Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical environments, as well as how to take care of yourself after exposure and information on shelter from nuclear fallout/radiation that explains breakdown and half-life and how certain materials affect the radiation absorbtion. I was very disappointed to see that it wasn't included but am glad that I have this information available anyway. I plan on printing that section and placing it in the back of the book when I finish putting together my bug out bag. Overall very satisfied.

I just got this book and am starting to read through it, on page 35. So far i feel that it is going to have a lot of great information i'll need to be prepared for survival situations. One of the good points i noticed when flipping through is there are color pictures of edible plants in the back plus a bunch of helpful information regarding, trapping, first aid, signalling, and a lot of other topics. Once i finish reading it i will update this review further, but from what i've seen so far i would recommend this book.I would also recommend the Gem SAS Survival Guide [Paperback] by John "Lofty" Wiseman to go along with this book. Great to keep in your car or pocket just in case you are out when a situation occurs.

Awesome field manual. Hardback and sturdy. Contains a wealth of information on so many different survival needs for anyone who is planning on camping or stay outdoors in the wild for long periods of time. Just as good as the real Army field manual. Also this book contains extras such as edible plants and insects, as well as poisonous plants and insects guides in the back.

This book was a gift to a young man who enjoys camping in all kinds of weather and terrain. He let me know that he really enjoys it and is trying out some suggestions. He said the information was fresh and new to him and that it was well put together and easy to understand and duplicate. Don't you just love it when someone you shop for enjoys your gift? If you have a camper/explorer in your group of friends and family this would make a nice gift.

It gives detailed information about surviving different situations, like being stranded at ocean, desert, jungle, etc. I got one for a family member and they had been in the military for a couple of years and they thought it was informative. For some reason I have never really connected with the character of Nick Fury. I can't really say why. I was looking for something different than my 'usual', even though I typically read a variety of genres. Garth Ennis can write some pretty hardcore stories. Full of action, smart dialogue, hard heroes and harder women. I have only read the first 'chapter' in this so far, but I had to stop and write this review. This is a Nick Fury I can read over and over. I can't recommend this book enough. It is definitely for adults, as it is from the Marvel MAX line of books. I'll be buying everything in this series. I haven't even mentioned the art by Goran Parlov. I wasn't familiar with his work before I saw it here. I think he is one of the best out there. His style fits the noir spy, cold war spy, hard boiled, you name it.As I said, everyone needs to buy this book. You will not be disappointed.

Ennis is good at gritty, but he is particularly good here with this cold war era Nick Fury that is as grimy as much of the 70s film Ennis is clearly taking inspiration from. Political intrigue and war comics are far more his inspiration for this incarnation of Nick Fury than any superhero comic.

Garth Ennis has written the definitive Nick Fury story. I know that's a bold statment, and that Nick Fury was created in 1963 by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby and has been written by hundreds of writers over the last 50 years. Heretofore, I thought that Brian Michael Bendis's interpretation of Nick Fury in both the regular Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Marvel Universe was the best handling of the character.I started reading comics in the mid-1980's, and at that point, Nick Fury was wearing a strange, all-blue body SHIELD costume (it lacked dignity and didn't seen like something the world's greatest spy would wear). I read a lot of back issues, and the Sgt. Fury from the 60's and 70's has campy and contrived dialogue.Garth Ennis approaches Nick Fury with the same energy, seriousness and deadliness that he wrote his "Preacher" and "Punisher" books. This is Nick Fury for grownups, and it delivers in the backdrop of the Vietnam war, the Bay of Pigs and a number of other real conflicts from American history. It's believable, edgy, entertaining and deep. I want more.

In 2001 Marvel released a 6-issue miniseries under its ‘adult’ MAX line of comics. The series, titled simply ‘Fury’, was written by Garth Ennis, and was intended as a Postmodern treatment of the Nick Fury character. With the ending of the Cold War and the cessation of the conflict that defined his entire life, Fury is depicted as spiritually adrift, caught up in an existential crisis.Ennis’s script was not particularly imaginative, choosing to adopt a left-wing ideology in its portrayal of Fury as a borderline psychopath, whose patriotism and devotion to Duty, Honor, Country, and the American Way was at best a pretext through which he could satiate his lust for violence and bloodshed and (of course) his deeply sublimated hatred of nonwhite ethnics.‘Fury Volume 1’ succeeded, mainly because it (unintentionally) subverted its left-wing ideology by taking a politically incorrect approach to Fury’s efforts to find new sources of mayhem to justify his existence. The series gleefully reveled in the kind of explicit sex and violence associated previously with underground comix artists like S. Clay Wilson, drawing criticism for its content …..and this, of course, was precisely what Bill Jemas, the then-President of Marvel, and a dedicated comic book iconoclast - wanted from the Max line !In 2012, more than a decade later, Marvel rebooted Volume 2 of the Fury franchise for the MAX imprint, this time as a lengthier, 13-issue series subtitled ‘My War Gone By’.Ennis wrote the entire second MAX series , with Goran Parlov providing the art. Unlike Volume 1, Volume 2 chose to place Fury in some of the Cold War’s more visible conflicts. As of September, 2015, the series has been compiled into two graphic novels, titled – confusingly - Fury MAX: My War Gone By, volumes 1 and 2.The other reviewers here at amazon give a pretty complete overview of Fury MAX: My War Gone By, Volume 1, so I will simply observe that the book, not unsurprisingly, takes a left-wing stance in terms of framing the Cold War and its ‘dirty wars’ of liberation.The first arc of Fury MAX: My War Gone By, Volume 1, deals with the French effort to retain control of Vietnam in the 1950s, and the hesitant, fumbling efforts by the U.S. to swing the conflict in their favor. Ennis’s treatment of the U.S. attitude towards Vietnam in the 50s adheres to that set forth in the 2002 movie ‘The Quiet American’, i.e., it is a mixture of economic self-interest, and a profoundly naïve dedication to Saving the World from Communism.The same stance permeates the second arc of Fury MAX: My War Gone By, Volume 1, where Fury is coaxed into participating in the Bay of Pigs attack on Cuba in 1961. Here the emphasis is on Fury’s ability to emerge bloodied but alive from one debacle after another, debacles engineered by cowardly politicians and amoral Cuban Exiles.Whatever your reaction to Ennis’s decision as to frame the stories in ideological terms, the narratives do provide the violent action needed in a Max book about a warfighter.Where Fury MAX: My War Gone By, Volume 1 falls short is in the artwork by Parlov. It seeks to emulate the style of classic adventure comic strips of the Cold War, like Milton Caniff’s ‘Steve Canyon’ (1947 – 1988),but instead comes across as sketchy and unfinished; in too many of the ‘combat’ panels, it is difficult to make out what is taking place, and who is whom; a more accomplished, realistic approach to draftsmanship is necessary for this type of comic.Summing up, Fury MAX: My War Gone By, Volume 1 provides the ‘adult content’ the MAX imprint is designed to market. But its treatment of the subject matter adheres to the status quo, and fails to break new ground in terms of portraying the Cold War in an original way.

This series fits Fury's character perfectly. A cynical man who wants to be a patriot, but finds it hard in the absence of a clear cut enemy like the nazis.

If you loved Punisher MAX and Punisher Platoon, this book is for you. Just buy it. This is another classic book by Ennis/Parlov.

exceeded my expectations, picked it up more for the writer than the character. Don't expect any groundbreaking depth, but very entertaining, especially if you like war stories.

Stephen Halliwell is Professor of Greek and Wardlaw Professor of Classics at the University of St Andrews. He has taught in the universities of Oxford, London, Cambridge, and Birmingham, and held visiting professorships in Belgium, Canada, Italy, and the USA. His extensive publications on Greek literature, philosophy, and culture include two prize-winning books: Greek Laughter: A Study of Cultural Psychology from Homer to Early Christianity (Criticos Prize 2008), and The Aesthetics of Mimesis: Ancient Texts and Modern Problems (Premio Europeo d'Estetica, 2008). His book Between Ecstasy and Truth: Interpretations of Greek Poetics from Homer to Longinus was published by Oxford University Press in 2011. He is a Fellow of both the British Academy and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

The great British actor David Garrick is supposed to have said on his deathbed that "dying is easy; comedy is hard." Well, that goes for translating Aristophanes. Though there are aspects of Aristophanes' humor that are funny at all times and places, there are also aspects that are "topical"--i.e., Aristophanes is making jokes at the expense of politicians and other people of his time. Thanks to people who, in ancient times, wrote "footnotes" to the plays and who may or may not themselves have known what the humor was about (as they were usually writing a couple of centuries after the situations in question), we sometimes know, in a general way, who the people were and what kind of fun Aristophanes was poking at them. But, notoriously, any joke that has to be explained is not a funny joke. In addition, there is the problem of what to do about the fact that Aristophanes wrote his plays in verse form. Obviously there are plays in modern times, and even comedies, that have been written in verse (some of Moliere's, for instance), and some of those who have translated Aristophanes into English have resorted to using a kind of doggerel. It usually comes across as trying to be like the poetry that W.S. Gilbert wrote for the Gilbert-and-Sullivan operettas, though not quite making it. The upshot is, it's really hard to craft a translation that's really funny, in the way that the plays presumably were funny, without having to count on the reader making allowances for 2,400 years having gone by since the jokes were first cracked. I have also seen stage productions of Aristophanes' plays that attempt to come up with 'modern equivalents' of the humor, so that people sitting in a theater, who aren't in a position to read footnotes, can at least 'get' some of the humor without its having to be explained to them. For the average theater audience this is probably necessary, but it takes the reader at home too far away from the original Aristophanes for that reader to feel like the translation is really providing a closely equivalent experience. Ultimately a translation of Aristophanes has to take its place somewhere on the continuum between a translation that 'hands you everything on a platter' but isn't really what Aristophanes wrote, and a literal translation in which you have to do a lot of heavy lifting to figure out, in places, why what Aristophanes is doing is funny. Halliwell finds a place on that continuum that satisfies me. My only source of unhappiness is that only two volumes of his translations of Aristophanes have yet been published--I hope a third volume to complete the series is in the works.
