This is not a complete clip-art book. It is not a composite out of many sources, even in the 19th C, with different styles. This is the complete collection of b&w engraved plates from a single German encyclopedia, 1851, but only the plates and their captions. Subject areas include mathematics & astronomy (sky charts); physics & meteorology; chemistry, minerology & geology; botany; zoology; anthropology & surgery (anatomical); geography & planology (maps of continents, countries, and select cities); history & ethnology; military science; naval science; architecture (w/plans of famous buildings); mythology & religious rites (as understood in 1851); the fine arts; & technology. So illustrations range from complex pulleys and horse skulls to knights in battle and how they built the Thames Tunnel. "Alphabets of Various Languages for the Use of Engravers" includes even samples of cuneiform. Two plates are on theatre architecture. Among the least satisfying may be the engravings of famous works of art for the Fine Arts section. At nearly 600 pages, landscape, the book is difficult to manage on a scanner. I just use a sharp craft blade and cut out close to the binding the pages I need to scan. Then I stick them back in the space. Bit by bit, they are becoming what the originals were, a portfolio of loose pieces. The maps went first: scanned at 400 dpi, they became readable on screen, where the print on the page was too small. I suspect the original plates were larger and were shrunk when photographed for reproduction.

I gush over antiquated pen and ink illustrations, they are magical and impressive to behold. When I discovered this book title through a suggestion from Amazon, my jaw dropped when I used the 'look inside this book' option. There are so many illustrations placed on a single page, it is truly breathtaking.

Wonderful book. I was surprised at the price of this book. I thought it would be a lot more money for the size and quality of this book. I was so impressed when this book arrived. Im sure I will use it often.

Wonderful book. My second copy as first fell apart and now being used for leave drying. As I dry the leaves am often cut up by incredible images on the pages with the leaves. So decided I needed newer copy.

book was shipped in a plastic with zero protection. what would have been a nice book has all corners mashed from from rough handling I kept the book because I like the engravings but a book should never be shipped like this.

Great book. Great price

I would recommend this to anyone wanting some classic illustrations for web development. I'm considering cutting the pages out of the book so I can scan them better and filing them in a box for later. The pages are super heavy duty and very nice. To scan a full page would take a large format (11 X 17) scanner or greater.

this book is an awesome historical treasure

I am having a hard time putting this Workbook down! I've read the section in the UB on the Life of Jesus and found it to be mesmerizing. But this Workbook is organized in a thematic approach with short, two to five paragraphs on a given topic from the Life of Jesus. The book also references the New Testament as it describes, in the wonderful Urantia Book style, the time and place that Jesus may have said something to His disciples or when He gave a parable to people curious about His teachings. The workbook is divided into four main parts: The Sayings of Jesus; The Miracles; The Parables; and The Sermons of Jesus. At the end of the book there is a Comparison of the Life of Jesus with the Four Gospels.

EXCELLENT synopsis of all of Jesus' sayings, sermons, miracles and parables in one volume.

The Urantia book is... Unusual. These workbook will give you a deeper understanding of it if that is what your looking for.

Definitely will help guide you and deepen your understanding of the Urantia book's principles. I find the Jesus papers to be the most interesting, and the workbook helps you discover things you don't get from simply reading and studying the text. A must for a Urantia student.

As people who have been through the search process know, it can be (and usually is) an emotional roller coaster. Pam Slaton is a thoroughly professional, diligent, honest, and importantly, successful searcher. She has a wonderful combination of technical ability, knowledge of resources, and gut instinct for the challenging profession she has chosen.Reunited is a smorgasbord of reunion stories, revealing the good, the bad, the ugly, and the exquisite that come through the process of searching, finding, and then living with the aftermath. For those contemplating searching, this book is an encouragement and a reality check about what may be in store. For those who have completed their searches, this book will show you that you are not alone, whether your reunion has been what you wanted or not. For those who know someone who is searching, thinking about it, or finished with it, this book will give you insight into the journey. And for those who have no connection whatsoever with searching, Reunion is a good read, with interesting characters and well-developed plots in each story. This is a great book written well by a successful professional searcher. I highly recommend it.

I grew up not knowing who my mother was and found out who she was through DNA. (see: The Twain Shall Meet, Susan Bailey) I'm a sucker for books like this and I'm always rooting for the seeker to find the long lost family. The fact that Pamela Seaton has helped so many to do just this keeps me rooting for her. I enjoyed it thoroughly!

Just finished this and loved it...Pamela is an amazing woman who knows how to sniff out old information about those who were given up at birth.. She was adopted as well so she is able to relate to those she serves....She has included some very interesting stories as well as some of her history.. I just wish the book was longer since I couldn't put it down and didn't want it to end..Insightful and very interesting no matter where you come from...So glad that today adoptions aren't as secretive as they once were. She's helped lots of people deal with the pain and happiness of finding families..

Poignant and inspiring real-life stories of searching for biological relatives, which exemplify why so many people are prepared to devote decades of their lives to filling in crucial gaps in their biographies and which argue a powerful case for changes in legislation to enable them to do so.

As a huge fan of Pam's "Searching For ..." TV show, I could hardly wait to read this book. As an adult adoptee, I have read several adoption-themed books by various authors, but so far, this has been the best. I thought she did a great job of accurately summarizing the wide range of feelings adoptees have; the ones we share and the ones we don't talk about because they are just too painful. Every chapter tugged at my heart and I caught myself wiping my eyes. The "Lesson" at the end of each chapter was a really nice touch. This was a GREAT read. I couldn't put it down. Thanks, Pam. Please tell us we can look forward to a Volume II!

A thoroughly enjoyable book. I learned a lot about adopted children and how important it is for them to know where they came from.

A book which should be read by anyone who ever had to give up a child or any one who was placed for adoption. The stories within are those of the joys and the heartaches of seeking and/or the finding of a birth parent or a birth child.

I have already uncovered most of my birth "secrets" but I don't know how or whether to take the next step. Pamela's book gave me a lot of food for thought and it is very well done! Recommended.

Came well packed and in a timely manner. This author is concise and weaves new information into established scholarship. Good read for someone truly interested in the details of Martha Canary's life. Plenty of geographical details to back up the information as well.

I was disappointed in this book. It was full of things of things Calamity Jane said that weren't true but they don't know the truth. It would've been better as an article telling us the facts that we do know are true about Calamity Jane and her siblings.

Very insightful. I especially enjoyed Judge Greer who presided over the Terri Shivo case in Florida. That judge is a hero. His story gave me hope that even in a divided country there will still be courageous heroes who put country and the rule of law before party.

I couldn't put this down! Compelling stories of the cases that fix themselves in a judge's mind. As someone with no legal connection, I still found the writing and stories mesmerizing!

Ordered this book for family members in memory of judge. Very well received.

This book is a law buff’s dream. Three judges have collected essays by thirteen judges who served, or are serving, on various lower courts — sadly but unsurprisingly, there are no contributions by Supreme Court justices or federal circuit court judges. The editors’ aim: “to demystify judicial decision-making and to make the process accessible to ordinary people, who would not otherwise get a ringside seat.” And the judges do exactly that: They describe, beat by beat, how they ruled on their toughest cases. You know some of these cases. Elián González. Terri Schiavo. Scooter Libby. And you will be surprised at how not tough they were to decide — but why they were, in fact, tough. For George Greer, who ruled that Schiavo’s husband had the legal authority to let his brain-dead wife die, the hardest decisions were personal. Dead flowers were delivered to his wife, with a note: “no food… no water.” His church kicked him out. Law enforcement was stationed at his house for months. Along the way, he learned something important: “Not too many people have had to stand up to their president, their congress, their legislature, and their church. I would never have known for sure I had the strength to do that if not for this case.” Only later did he learn he’d made the right decision — when Schiavo died and he saw the autopsy: “The portion of the brain to which the optic nerve is attached was completely missing. There was no way she could have responded to any of the visual tests she was subjected to.”In the Elián González case, Judge Jennifer Bailey had to decide whether to return a seven-year-old Cuban boy to his father in Cuba or allow him to stay with relatives in Miami. If you know anything about Florida, you know that Cuban refugees historically despises Castro — and every state and national politician took care not to alienate those repatriated Cubans. There was immense political pressure on Judge Bailey. She takes the reader through it, beat by beat, and compares it to the legal issues, which were comparatively simple. “I did not deserve praise for resisting [the political forces],” she concludes. “I simply ignored the politics, which is what judges are supposed to do.”The less well known the case, the greater the interest for me.Frederick H. Weisberg, one of the book’s editors, had the task of judging Banita Jacks, 33, who killed her four daughters in Washington, D.C. and lived for months with their remains. She declined a jury trial, refused an insanity defense. Much of this piece is the judge’s questioning of this defendant, who is extremely lucid here. And yet…Then there’s the judge on a Native American court who is caught between U.S. law with tribal law; a feather plays an important role here. “I feel like I can hear my ancestors,” she writes. “They are telling me we can’t afford to throw away our community members who make mistakes.” And there’s a girl who became desperately ill and then got worse because her mother poisoned her in the hospital. And a case in Washington where the voters went one way and the state’s constitution went another. “They don’t pay me to be right,” the judge notes. “They pay me to be fair.”I was particularly impressed with that judge, Robert H. Alsdorf of Washington. He does something you don’t see often: he notes the compelling arguments of the losers. “I try to explicitly note for the losing party how laudable . . . its . . . legal argument is, and then give a straightforward explanation of why that factor nonetheless cannot be used by the court to justify a ruling in its favor. . . . We can acknowledge this without losing any judicial power.” And the losers know they’ve been heard. And there are fascinating breadcrumbs along the way. Did you know that only one state has expressly prohibited sex between an attorney and his client? And that Texas had the chance to make that illegal in 2017? And that 72 percent voted against the change? I guess if you’re a lawyer who likes to cross the ethical line with a client, Texas is not the worst place to practice.

This is a compendium of a dozen or so cases, some famous, some not, by the trial judges who tried them. They range from the well known case of Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban child who landed in Fla. and whose relatives flew into a tremendous dispute as to his being returned to Cuba, to cases in state and Federal courts including an intriguing murder/insanity case in Washington, DC, a case in an Indian tribal court, and others, civil and criminal. A few of the cases are a bit hard to follow; others are fascinating. If you ever wondered what a trial judge thinks and how he/she goes about their duty, you'll find this a very interesting read.

This is a compilation of cases each written by the presiding judge that he or she found to be difficult for one reason or another. Some were headline cases, such as Terry Schiavo “right to die”; Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban refugee child; and Scooter Libby, who squealed on Valerie Plane, was convicted of lying to the FBI, whose sentence was commuted by Bush and subsequently pardoned by Trump. Most of the cases were difficult not because of the law, which was clear cut, but because of the publicity and the involvement of Republican politicians in Florida and in the Scooter Libby case. The fact that most of these judges were elected and wished to run again and the lawyers appearing before them often contribute to their campaigns is an unstated argument against election of judges. This is a short book, designed for the layman, but engaging and informative nonetheless.

Good reminder that a strong judiciary is our best hope for continued liberty from tyranny. Most of the judges are excellent writers and make this a pleasure to read. I enjoyed getting the background and insight into the judges thinking on cases from those in the spotlight to the unknown but equally intersting cases.

True to life stories from the obscurity of a jurists personal point of view. Behind the scenes of some very momentous judicial and political issues of the U.S. sharing the emotional experiences of a judge. Too short. Looking for more reading like this without wading through case histories.

Icy Sparks (Oprah's Book Club), by Gwyn Hyman Rubio

Amazon.com Review

The eponymous heroine of Gwyn Rubio's Icy Sparks is only 10 years old the first time it happens. The sudden itching, the pressure squeezing her skull, and the "little invisible rubber bands" attached to her eyelids are all symptoms of Tourette's syndrome. At this point, of course, Icy doesn't yet have a name for these unsettling impulses. But whenever they become too much to resist, she runs down to her grandparents' root cellar, and there she gives in, croaking, jerking, cursing, and popping her eyes. Nicknamed the "frog child" by her classmates, Icy soon becomes "a little girl who had to keep all of her compulsions inside." Only a brief confinement at the Bluegrass State Hospital persuades her that there are actually children more "different" than she. As a first novel about growing up poor, orphaned, and prone to fits in a small Appalachian town, Icy Sparks tells a fascinating story. By the time the epilogue rolls around, Icy has prevailed over her disorder and become a therapist: "Children silent as stone sing for me. Children who cannot speak create music for me." For readers familiar with this particular brand of coming-of-age novel--affliction fiction?--Icy's triumph should come as no great surprise. That's one problem. Another is Rubio's tendency to lapse into overheated prose: this is a novel in which the characters would sooner yell, pout, whine, moan, or sass a sentence than simply say it. But the real drawback to Icy Sparks is that some of the characters--especially the bad ones--are drawn with very broad strokes indeed, and the moral principles tend to be equally elementary: embrace your difference, none of us is alone, and so on. When Icy gets saved at a tent revival, even Jesus takes on the accents of a self-help guru: "You must love yourself!" With insights like these, this is one Southern novel that's more Wally Lamb than Harper Lee. --Mary Park

From Booklist

Growing up in a small town in Kentucky, young Icy Sparks is set apart from her classmates by her weird mannerisms and strange noises. Not until she becomes an adult does Icy learn that her tics, croaks, and groans are all part of Tourette's syndrome, a neurological disease of which few people in the 1950s were aware. As a child, Icy suffers through taunts and mockery by her classmates. Even the adults closest to her--her loving grandparents who raise her, her school principal, and her despicable fourth-grade teacher--view her with alarm. Icy is sent to a children's asylum, where doctors try to discover the cause of her disease. While she is in the asylum, Icy begins to see beyond her own differences to the sufferings of others far worse off than she. Although many of the characters in this first novel are portrayed so simplisticly that they are either very good or unbelievably bad, this is a fast-moving and enjoyable narrative. A good choice for public libraries. Nancy Pearl

My son has Tourette's Syndrome so I was especially excited to read this. I know every case is different but the way it presented itself was so very different than my sons experience. I also had a hard time relating to Icy in any way. I found myself wishing the book would end so I could read something else-never a good sign, but I didn't give up; I did finish it.

Did not enjoy this book at all. The characters were unlikeable, unrealistic, and no one who was 'bad' ever got what was coming to them. This book had the potential to really shed light on Tourette's syndrome, but instead, it took unlikeable characters and created more disdain for their maladies. Also, there was so much extra plot that was unnecessary and made it harder to read than it should have been.

I took months to finish this book and only did so to quiet that Tourette-like OCD that often tyrannically rules my brain. I found it repetitive, meandering, overly pandering, insulting to obese women, and sometimes utterly boring. BUT .. IT GETS WORSE... I listened to it on the audio book, and that was even worse. The reader chose to try to present the book as a sort of one woman play, and it didn't go well. The regional accents were not accurate. The voices were often annoying, and the worst thing ever was the "singing" toward the end of the book. I found myself saying out loud, "please don't sing!" more than once. The narrator's singing voice was not unpleasant, but she was just making up her own melodies for old and well respected hymns that she could easily have learned. If you're going to sing, at least learn the correct melody, please! So, in short, I would never recommend this book to anyone and cannot understand why it won awards. Tourette's Syndrome sufferers deserve better. Apologies to those who loved it. Not my cup of tea.

Icy Sparks is an interesting book. One of its primary assets is the beautiful descriptive prose used throughout the book. Also, it gives a vivid portrayal of the disorder which plagued Icy. However, the story really bogged down in the middle with a drawn out hospital stay, homeschooling, and lags in action. I thought surely we would come to the discovery of the disorder and hope for the future, but it didn't come until the epilogue and was strictly a report, disappointing.

I really enjoyed the characters in this book especially Icy. To see this girl grow into a woman and travel along her road to acceptance. The book takes place in n the mountainous areas of coal country where sophistication isn't important but the globe that Icy has from family and friends does sustain her. It does start ow but then is a page turner.

This was not my usual type of reading, but I was quickly engulfed be the story and to learn not of just what affliction Icy suffered from, but in how she grewup in the small Kentucky blessed with people who loved her for who she was and help her to become who they seen she could be. Heart warming and very entertaining.

This is one of those books once you read ten pages of the book you will not be able to put it down. I read this book in two days because I could not put it down except to sleep. This book is very sad; however, it is a great book and this is in my list of top ten books. I felt very close to the characters in the book and the emotions they were going through. The book is realistic in terms of real life scenarios. Great book and would recommend to anyone looking for a great book to read. This book will touch your heart for sure. Great book

Icy Sparks tracks the life of a bright and curious young girl with Tourette's Syndrome from age ten to adulthood. The protagonist, Icy Sparks, is from the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky. She is raised by her loving grandparents named Matanni and Patanni; an empathic friend named Miss Emily; and a caring school principal named Mr. Wooten. At the age of ten, Icy starts to have uncontrollable urges to pop out her eyes. The urge is "so intense it was, like an itch needing to be scratched. I [Icy] could feel little invisible rubber bands fastened to my eyelids, pulled tight through my brain." Not only did Icy suffer from eye-popping tics, she also suffered from an uncontrollable need to verbally outburst thoughts that were on her mind. Icy tried to hide the fact she suffered from Tourette's Syndrome but it always flared up when Icy felt strong emotions. The town Icy lived in did not understand her disease so she was treated like an outcast. For example, she was forced out of the public school system and had to educate herself in the school's supply room. When her tics and verbal outbursts did not cease in the supply room, Icy was subsequently institutionalized. With all these educational setbacks, Icy does obtain an exceptional home-schooled education with the help of Miss Emily and Mr. Wooten.Even though Icy withdraws from society for fear of being made fun of, Icy learns to accept her disease and, most importantly, accept that she is labeled. However, the biggest lesson Icy learns is that Tourette's Syndrome does not stop her from learning that she can love and be loved.
